Each track serves as a powerful reflection on the importance of community and self-acceptance, showcasing Hagood’s distinctive artistry and his unwavering commitment to inclusivity within the genre.
Nashville staple Fancy Hagood’s American Spirit beckons listeners into a rich tapestry of sound and emotion, transcending traditional genre boundaries and carving out a distinctive space for inclusivity in country and Americana music.
Released on October 25, this album unfolds as a vibrant exploration of identity, resilience, and the kaleidoscopic nature of human experience. Each track is a vivid brushstroke on the canvas of life, reflecting the joys and struggles that shape our shared journey. With this work, Hagood not only challenges the norms of the genre but also uplifts voices often left unheard, creating a powerful anthem for inclusivity and celebration.
Hagood’s American Spirit radiates like an anthem of self-acceptance and fierce individuality. At 17, he uprooted his life and charged toward Nashville, determined to make it as an openly queer country artist – a pursuit the city’s gatekeepers discouraged. Undeterred, Hagood pivoted to pop, going to Los Angeles and opening for stars like Meghan Trainor and Ariana Grande.
While the pop world held promise, it lacked the raw honesty he craved, ultimately steering him back to Nashville with a strengthened sense of purpose and the desire to build a more inclusive space for queer voices in country music.
American Spirit embodies Hagood's return to a place and a sense of artistic freedom where his own truth takes center stage. Forging new sounds with legendary producers like John Osborne, Jarrad K, and Jeremy Lutitio, and collaborating with icons such as Sean Watkins and Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek, Hagood embraced his roots while charting fresh territory. From reflective tracks that grapple with heartbreak and resilience to songs that carry the warmth of community and unyielding joy, Hagood’s sophomore album celebrates every shade of his journey.
This music transcends genre — displaying vulnerability, pride, and the hard-won realization that our identities are our most vital assets. Each note of American Spirit is steeped in the freedom he once chased, now fully realized, creating a sonic haven where Hagood's vibrant, complex spirit thrives.
