Bella Thorne is giving fans something to talk about and a little controversy, too. On Saturday, Aug. 16, the 27-year-old actress and singer shared a post on Instagram revealing that she had proposed to her fiancé, Mark Emms, two years after he first popped the question.

Accompanied by a series of photos and clips of the romantic moment, Thorne wrote, “3 years ago we met, 1 year later he proposed, Now 1 year later so did I 🥴❤️.”

In the videos, she can be seen kneeling in front of Emms, presenting him with a ring as candles flicker and colorful flowers surround them. Red heart-shaped balloons spelled out the words “I Love You,” completing the picture-perfect proposal.

While many followers rushed to cheer her on, some couldn’t help but weigh in critically. One comment, which racked up nearly 80,000 likes, read: “Ok ladies let’s not normalise this, okay?”

Thorne didn’t let the backlash bother her. On Sunday, Aug. 17, she responded to the mixed reactions in her Instagram Stories, posting a photo of Emms with a dog on his lap and writing, “The comments on my post are hilarious!! Totally split down the middle. Half of u are like let's not normalize proposing to your partner – other half is like f--- yeah girl power this is the sweetest!!”

Fans have long been invested in Thorne’s love story with Emms, who first proposed in May 2023 at her California home, giving her an emerald-cut diamond ring.

In interviews at the time, Thorne shared her vision for their wedding: a countryside ceremony in the U.K., where Emms is from, complete with not one, but four bridal gowns. Reflecting on the start of their romance, Thorne told Vogue that meeting Emms at Cara Delevingne’s birthday party in Ibiza in 2022 was love at first sight.

“It was love at first sight as the sun rose,” she said.

Thorne's proposal, complete with thoughtful details and a playful role reversal, shows that love doesn’t follow a strict timeline or a rulebook. And judging by the mixed online reactions, fans can’t get enough of debating it.
