We are loving Olivia's new album, keep reading to get our full thoughts and ranking!
"drop dead"
The lead single from this album is a positive turn from her more heartbreak-prone songs, and it’s one that fans love! The bridge of this song, "(Oh) One night, I was bored in bed/ And stalked you on the internet/It's feminine intuition /'Cause I always had a vision of us standing like this," is a popular TikTok and Instagram trend as well. This song is very short and sweet, providing a new crush anthem for fans everywhere.
"stupid song"
A song reflective on how silly and "stupid" love can make you feel, Olivia reflects on how it feels being deeply in love, and how insane we tend to feel when we’re in a happy, healthy relationship. A very emotional song about how love feels, the instrumental is jam-packed with elements of alt rock, with a switch-up mid-song to a tamer drum and guitar instrumental. This song is beautiful and captures how, sometimes, love is a feeling many can’t express.
"honeybee"
A melancholy song, Olivia expresses her ability to let go of the past, and is still finding herself struggling to be able to express love to her partner in a way that many deem "normal." This song also repeats the line, “And I hope I never see what your face looks like going / A face I swear that I could spend my whole life knowing," a line that is strong and can emphasize how deeply in love she is. This song, with its soft piano instrumental, is a beautiful piece that conveys how hard it is for some people to show their love, and even in their "silence," they’re deeply in love. This is one of our personal favorites from this album.
"maggots for brains"
This track has a very new-wave instrumental, a theme throughout this album. Compared to her prior poppy albums, this one is more in line with an alternative theme, opening a new world of possibilities for listeners. Olivia sings about a feeling, similar to obsession, that many experience when they have crushes or are in the "honeymoon" stage of a relationship, where, as she puts it, a "zombie" state overtakes her when she’s apart from her lover. It explores themes of codependency in a relationship and how our mind becomes full of the person we love in an almost obsessive format.
"u + me= <3"
A very poppy track, Olivia reflects on how she wants the relationship to last forever, even with the fears of love. "So buy me silver jewelry and all my favorite Cadbury/And tell me yet again about when we met and what you thought of me/Sometimes, I get overwhelmed and way too far ahead of myself/I often get the feeling that I'll never want somebody else," she sings. In the bridge, driving the point home that she feels satisfied in her relationship and is experiencing what would be considered the "honeymoon" stage.
"my way"
A very rock song, this one tackles jealousy in a relationship, a very revenge-esque track. Similar to her prior albums' main themes. Olivia sings about a hypothetical girl overstepping her boundaries with Olivia's partner, singing "Don’t go where you don't belong, think I can’t make out how hard you hang on.”
"purple"
Possibly a reference to her past albums, both having a purple aesthetic compared to her now light pink one, this song tackles love at first, discussing how there are "doubles"of everything, and how they’re attached at the hip. This continues until the last eight lines of the song, where she bluntly states that they’ve "melted together" until they’re sad and "black," something that can happen when a relationship is too co-dependent.
"the cure"
The second single from this album, and a personal favorite of ours, it’s a rather emotional tune. Olivia sings about a failed relationship, where she feels herself falling apart due to her own personal issues and her past traumas from exes. Something that many teenage girls do is find relationships they think may heal them or that they’re fully ready for, but, as Olivia says, they come "unraveled" as they realize they’re not fully prepared for a relationship. A beautiful, somber melody that speaks a truth about love.
"begged"
First performed on Olivia’s SNL episode, this song is about "begging" your partner to give you attention. She’s in a relationship with someone who won’t show her affection the way she desires, and after many futile attempts, she feels that she’s begging to be loved. Another emotional track, this is one of the songs that feeds into the "pretty sad" section of the album title. She lets herself be ignored in an attempt not to become desperate for attention from her partner.
"what’s wrong with me"
A collaboration with music icon Robert Smith, this song reflects on her problem being the love she feels for her partner, and how no matter what she does to avoid the problem, the true answer is right in front of her. A beautiful mix of vocals between Rodrigo and Smith, this is a classic that all fans can enjoy and relate to.
"less"
Another melancholy track, Olivia expresses the end of a relationship. She woefully sings about how her relationship is falling apart day by day, and even with the several attempts made to save it, it eventually has to end. The repeated lyric "I wish you loved me less,"drives this point home.
"expectations"
With a slightly upbeat instrumental, this song is about creating better standards for yourself. Singing that she "won’t kiss any boy that is passive," Rodrigo tells us she is standing on her ground and choosing better men for herself.
"cigarette smoke"
The final song on this album is a solemn reflection on how her ex is similar to "cigarette smoke," and is hard to get rid of. Begging for her time back, she sings about how she regrets even trying in her relationship. A beautiful song to end of a beautiful album that shows the ups and downs of relationships, while also touching on how your personal flaws reflect your relationships.
