In a tragic incident that has left the world in shock, a knife attack occurred during a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport, UK, resulting in the deaths of three children and injuring 11 others.

The class, meant to celebrate Swift's music, turned into a scene of horror when a 17-year-old male suspect launched an unprovoked attack. According to NewsWeek, the victims, all young children, and their families are now grappling with an unimaginable tragedy

On Tuesday, July 30, Merseyside Police confirmed through a news release obtained by PEOPLE that a 9-year-old girl died early in the morning from injuries sustained in the knife attack, which occurred around 11:50 a.m. the previous day, alongside the two other young girls.

They also stated, “We can confirm that the children who died yesterday were girls aged six and seven years," police stated regarding the other two victims.

"Eight other children suffered stab wounds sustained during the attack, and five of them are in a critical condition," the release continued. "Two adults are also in a critical condition after being injured during the incident."

The news release added, "Our specialist Family Liaison Officers are providing support to the families at this terrible time."

In the aftermath, people laid flowers near the scene in Southport, England. The police confirmed the arrest of a 17-year-old male from the village of Banks in Lancashire. "This incident is not currently being treated as terror-related and we are not looking for anyone else in connection with it," police said.

The incident took place at a property on Hart Street. The event, intended for children between the ages of 6 and 11, had been scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. local time.

Swift, deeply affected by the news, took to social media to express her condolences and disbelief.

"The horror of yesterday’s attack in Southport is washing over me continuously, and I’m just completely in shock," she wrote on her Instagram Story. "The loss of life and innocence, and the horrendous trauma inflicted on everyone who was there, the families and first responders. These were just little kids at a dance class. I am at a complete loss for how to ever convey my sympathies to these families."

The attack left five children and two adults in critical condition. The assailant was quickly apprehended by police and remains in custody on suspicion of murder. Authorities are investigating the motive behind the attack but have stated that they do not believe it was terror-related.

The incident has sparked a wave of support and sympathy from Swift's fanbase. A fundraiser organized by fans has raised over £47,000 (approximately $60,400) to support the victims and their families. The funds are being directed to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and funeral expenses for the deceased children.

This incident occurred as Swift continues her highly successful Eras Tour, which has garnered global acclaim for its ambitious scope and artistic execution. The tour, which features songs from across Swift's career, has become a cultural phenomenon, bringing together fans from around the world. Swift, currently performing in Europe, expressed her gratitude for the support from fans but emphasized her grief over the tragedy in Southport.

This tragic event has cast a shadow over the otherwise celebratory atmosphere surrounding Swift's tour, and her love and support for the family is palpable. The outpouring of support from her fan community and the broader public underscores the impact of such senseless violence and the importance of unity and compassion in times of tragedy.
