The MTV Video Music Awards are shaping up to be a competitive night, with several artists vying for the top honors. Fans voted for their choices in 15 categories at MTV.com through Aug. 30, and voting for other categories is open until tonight. The VMAs will air live on MTV Wednesday, Sept. 11 from from UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.

While Taylor Swift and Post Malone's collaboration on "Fortnight" is highly visible with multiple nominations, it's not necessarily the most groundbreaking or innovative entry. Despite its massive commercial success, "Fortnight" doesn't push the boundaries of music video creativity in the way that previous Swift efforts, such as "All Too Well (10 Minute Version)," have done. Instead, it feels more like a well-executed pop production than an iconic visual piece that reshapes the cultural conversation. While it's certainly a solid contender in categories like Video of the Year and Song of the Year, other nominees, such as Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us" and Ariana Grande's stunningly directed "we can't be friends (wait for your love)" featuring Evan Peters present more complex storytelling and visual artistry, making them stronger contenders on creative merit.

On the other hand, Swift’s likely victory in Artist of the Year seems more warranted. Her impact this year, particularly with the Eras Tour, has solidified her as one of the most influential figures in modern music. Her ability to continually connect with fans across genres, age groups, and geographies has made her nearly ubiquitous. While competitors like SZA and Post Malone have also had strong years, Swift’s sheer omnipresence and record-breaking achievements make her the most probable winner in this category.

Song of the Year: "Fortnight" is still likely to win due to its massive airplay and streaming success, but the track itself isn't as lyrically or sonically challenging as some of the other contenders. While undeniably catchy, its simplistic pop formula lacks the sonic depth and beats of SZA’s “Kill Bill” or the innovative soundscape and massive catchiness of Sabrina Carpenter’s "Espresso,"(our pick to win), both showcase more artistry in their production and overall hooks. Still, Swift’s wide appeal and the collaboration with Post Malone give the track a commercial edge that could secure the win despite less inventive songwriting.

Best New Artist: Chappell Roan is likely to stand out. Her distinct sound and introspective lyrics have garnered her a passionate following, and her rise in the pop scene feels both fresh and deserved. Compared to other newcomers like Ice Spice, who is more focused on mainstream hits, Roan’s artistic growth and creative risk-taking make her a strong contender. Her music doesn’t conform to industry trends but pushes boundaries, giving her a unique voice in a crowded field.

Best Collaboration: While "Fortnight" is expected to win, it doesn’t necessarily redefine what a musical partnership can achieve. The combination of Swift and Malone, two of the biggest names in the industry, is commercially savvy but lacks the unexpected chemistry that makes collaborations genuinely memorable. Tracks like Jungkook and Latto’s "Seven" or GloRilla & Megan Thee Stallion’s "Wanna Be" showcase more genre-blending and risk-taking – arguably making them more dynamic entries. Still, "Fortnight" may take the award due to its high profile, but it’s not the boldest choice creatively.

Best Hip-Hop: This cateogry is expected to stand out for legacy Eminem, whose song "Houdini" captures the raw, unfiltered energy he’s known for. While not groundbreaking compared to his past hits, "Houdini" showcases his ability to stay relevant in the ever-changing hip-hop landscape. The track’s aggressive lyricism and wordplay elevate it above other contenders in this category. Though artists like Kendrick Lamar and Megan Thee Stallion also bring strong entries, Eminem’s long-time fanbase and lasting appeal make him a favorite.
