Chappell Roan fans hoping for a quick follow-up to The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess may need to brace for a long wait. In a new interview with Vogue published on August 4, the rising pop star revealed that her next full-length album isn’t in the works just yet and may not be for quite some time.

“There is no album. There is no collection of songs,” Roan said, clarifying that although fans have been eager for new material following her recent singles “The Giver” and “The Subway,” a second album is far from complete. “My first album took five years to write. It’s probably going to take at least five to write the next. I’m not that type of writer that can pump it out.”

The Grammy-winning artist, known for her theatrical performances and deeply personal lyrics, said she refuses to rush her creative process.

“I don’t think I make good music whenever I force myself to do anything,” Roan told Vogue. “Even if I was in the studio 12 hours a day, every single day, that does not mean that you would get an album any faster.”

Roan also revealed that she’s stepping away from social media while working on her next project.

“The album process is purely, only mine. No one on TikTok gets to see it,” she said. “I’ve never written an album where I don’t have Instagram or anything.” She emphasized that protecting her creative headspace is essential for her artistry.

Her latest single, “The Subway,” was released in early August, accompanied by a visually striking music video filmed in New York’s Transit Museum. The emotional track took months to perfect.

“I was having a hard time getting over this one person,” Roan said of the inspiration behind the song. “When I was writing, I was constantly trying to be like, ‘We’re done, we’re done.’ The feelings are still there, even though we’re done.”

Roan first gained widespread attention with The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess in 2023, a genre-blending debut that quickly earned critical acclaim and cultivated a loyal fan base. In a 2023 interview with People, she described the project as a space for self-expression.

“The project gives people an opportunity to express themselves without judgment and freedom to discover themselves in the same way that I feel like the project allows me to discover myself.”

The new revelation about her next album’s timeline has sparked mixed reactions among fans. While many expressed disappointment over the delay, others voiced their support and understanding.

“I’m definitely bummed, but I respect her honesty,” one fan wrote on Instagram. “She’s creating something meaningful, and I’ll wait as long as it takes.”

For now, fans can enjoy Roan’s latest singles and live performances, but when it comes to Album No. 2, patience will be key.
