Billy McFarland has stayed silent on the latest updates surrounding Fyre Festival 2.
Fyre Festival 2, the much-anticipated sequel to the infamous 2017 disaster, has been “postponed,” according to organizers. Billy McFarland, the man behind the original Fyre Festival, had promised an extravagant event in Mexico from May 30 to June 2, with tickets starting at $1,400. But now, ticket holders are left waiting for a new date after a last-minute announcement that the festival is on hold.
“The event has been postponed, and a new date will be announced,” read the statement sent to festival-goers who have purchased tickets. “We have issued you a refund. Once the new date is announced, at that time, you can repurchase if it works for your schedule.”
McFarland, who served time in prison after being convicted of wire fraud related to the original Fyre Festival fiasco, had been advertising the event under the slogan “FYRE Festival 2 is real.” He and his new team promised a celebration of music, arts, cuisine, and more, set on the picturesque Isla Mujeres, Mexico. However, it seems McFarland’s plans have hit a major roadblock.
The Quintana Roo Tourism Department and the Playa Del Carmen government, where Isla Mujeres is located, have denied any knowledge of the event. In fact, officials have confirmed that there is no record of a festival by that name being approved or planned for the area.
Bernardo Cueto, tourism secretary for Quintana Roo, told ABC News that Fyre Fest 2 was something he had not been informed about. The Playa del Carmen municipal government also posted a statement confirming the same, stressing that public safety was their top priority.
“The municipal government of Playa del Carmen, informs that no event with that name will be held in our city,” said the statement. “After a responsible review of the situation, it was confirmed that there is no registration, planning, or conditions that indicate the realization of such an event in the municipality.”
The statement continued, “This municipal government is acting with responsibility and commitment, always with the priority placed on public order, security and family coexistence. We reiterate that any official information will be communicated directly and in a timely manner through the corresponding channels.”
McFarland isn’t backing down. Earlier this month (April 4), he took to the festival’s Instagram to share a timeline of messages with local officials, claiming he had the permits for the event. He posted screenshots of conversations with club owners and what looked like permits for smaller events.
On the other hand, fans weren’t having it. They quickly pointed out that the permits were for private beach clubs, not big festival venues.
“Billy is believing his own lies again,” one user commented, while another noted, “Those are NOT festival events or venues.”
Despite the pushback, McFarland remains adamant that Fyre Festival 2 is happening, just at a later date. The delays and confusion surrounding Fyre Festival 2 have many questioning if McFarland is simply chasing redemption or if he’s in over his head. After all, he’s trying to rebuild the reputation of an event that became infamous for its disastrous outcome in 2017.

Back then, festival-goers were stranded in the Bahamas with little to no accommodations, and promises of luxury villas and A-list performances were quickly exposed as scams. As McFarland pushes forward with his plans, it’s unclear whether Fyre Festival 2 will ever come to fruition or if it will go down in flames again.
