Lizzo reflects on battling depression in 2023, how a fan’s love helped her heal, and teases new music.
It's time for a mental health check, y’all! And who better to lead the charge than the queen of self-love and empowerment, Lizzo?
The “Good as Hell” hitmaker got real with fans at her recent concert (March 12) at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, opening up about her struggles with depression and how she fought her way back to joy.

The hitmaker has always been the poster girl for confidence, but even queens have their breaking points. She revealed that 2023 was one of the toughest years of her life – one that left her feeling lost and hopeless.
“I was in such a dark, deep depression,” Lizzo shared with the crowd, according to a fan-captured video. “I was so heartbroken by the world and so deeply hurt that I didn’t want to live anymore, and I was so deeply afraid of people that I didn’t want to be seen.”
This revelation comes after the Lizzo faced a wave of controversy last year. In August 2023, the singer was hit with lawsuits from former backup dancers alleging workplace harassment and a toxic environment – allegations she has repeatedly denied. Despite the legal drama, she found herself lifted by love in real life, which became the title of her upcoming album.
So, what changed for her? A simple but powerful moment of kindness from a fan.
“As I was walking through the crowd to get to my spot [at a concert], something miraculous happened,” Lizzo recalled. “Somebody, who I didn’t know, looked at me and said, ‘Lizzo, I love you.’ And they reached out, and I reached back, and we hugged, and it felt so damn good.”
The experience became a turning point for the Grammy-award winning artist.
“After that, I was like, ‘Damn, you can’t get this s--- on the internet, bro. This is the kind of love you can only get in real life.’” And just like that, a new era was born: Love in Real Life drops later this year, and fans are already hyped.
But Lizzo didn’t just spill her heart – she also blessed fans with a killer setlist, featuring classics like “Juice” and “About Damn Time,” plus fresh tracks “Love in Real Life." The new single “Still Bad” even came with a visually stunning, horror-inspired music video, proving that Lizzo is still serving up the unexpected.
The star has been on a self-described “weight release” journey, proudly showing off her progress on social media. From Twitch live streams to Instagram mirror selfies, Lizzo has embraced a new chapter of wellness on her own terms.
Beyond the music and the transformations, Lizzo had a message for anyone struggling with their own mental health battles.
“If you’re depressed, reach out to someone who will listen,” she urged. “If you’re mad about the government, reach out to someone else who’s mad about the government and f---ing organize. If you hate the way you look, reach out to someone who loves you and who will tell you, ‘You are f---ing beautiful as you are right now, no matter how your body changes.’”
Lizzo is proof that even when life throws its biggest punches, there’s always a way to dance through the storm. And whether it’s through music, self-care, or a simple hug, she’s showing us all how to keep it real and keep it moving.
