Green Day's latest project is a road trip movie for a new generation.
Green Day is making the jump to the silver screen. The first trailer for Nimrods was released this week (Jun 10), giving us fans our first look at the Green Day-produced movie. Starring Mckenna Grace & Mason Thames, Nimrods follows the fictional band "The Analog Dogs" as they set out on a road trip to open up for the iconic punk rockers.
We love a movie that quite literally takes place from a fan perspective.
According to the official movie synopsis, "When Tommy receives a phone call inviting his band to open for Green Day on New Year's Eve, he doesn’t realize it’s an elaborate prank by his older brother, Wayne. Desperate to believe his life is about to change, Tommy steals Wayne’s car and begins driving his band from Kansas City to Los Angeles, hell-bent on getting there in three days. What follows is a rowdy road trip across America, inspired by Green Day’s early days of touring in a van, years before the release of their breakout record Dookie."
Green Day's rabid fanbase is thrilled to see their favs in a motion picture, especially since many were expecting a documentary. Nimrods sits in an interesting space where it isn't a biopic either, but instead alludes to elements of Green Day's touring days told through a fictional, fan-inspired story.
Some eagle-eyed fans noticed that instead of Green Day's iconic Bookmobile, a converted mobile library the band toured in during their early days, the movie has updated it to an ice cream truck, another unconventional mode of touring. There have been a few comparisons to Detroit Rock City, a movie about four teens trying to get to a KISS concert inspired by the song of the same name.
Another huge draw for this movie is its two young stars Mckenna Grace & Mason Thames, who have made a splash online for their very public online relationship. Grace commented on Green Day's Instagram post with a cheeky, "I call dibs on the lead singer," which is now the most-liked comment.
Nimrods also stars Jenna Fischer, Angela Kinsey, Fred Armisen, and Bobby Lee, so you know that comedy was a priority when making the movie.
Green Day is no stranger to expanding its reach beyond concert stages. The band's now classic 2004 concept album American Idiot was turned into a Broadway production of the same name. It even won two Tonys. Who knows? Maybe Green Day could be the first punk band to reach EGOT status.
Nimrods hits theaters August 14.
