Raul Malo, the celebrated singer and frontman of The Mavericks, has tragically passed away at the age of 60.

The hitmaker lost his courageous battle with leptomeningeal disease (LMD), a rare form of cancer affecting the brain and spinal cord, according to the Cleveland Clinic

Rolling Stone was the first to announce the devastating news (Dec. 8) of his death. However shortly after,  his family turned to social media to speak to fans directly – confirming the news and paying tribute to the musician that significantly impacted the music industry.

They praised his infectious energy and unparalleled talent.

“At 8:52 pm on December 8th, 2025, my love… our boys’ father… a devoted son and brother… and a friend to so many, gained his angel wings. He was called to do another gig — this time in the sky — and he’s flying high like an eagle,” said the statement. “No one embodied life and love, joy and passion, family, friends, music, and adventure the way our beloved Raul did. Now he will look down on us with all that heaven will allow, lighting the way and reminding us to savor every moment.

The tribute continued, “Dino, Victor, Max and I — along with our entire family — thank all of you for your love and support through all of this. We felt every bit of it. In Raul’s own words: “Muchísimas gracias.”

Over a remarkable career spanning more than three decades, Malo enchanted millions around the globe with his spirited performances and powerful songwriting, earning multiple accolades, including Grammy and ACM awards. His groundbreaking work not only enriched American music but also made history when he became the first artist to debut at the top of both the Latin Pop and Folk-Americana charts in 2020.

Fans are currently grieving the loss of a musical legend who formed a deep connection with them through his heartfelt lyrics and performances. As tributes pour in from fans around the world, they celebrate Malo's legacy, acknowledging the indelible mark he has left on the music industry.

"There will never be another like Raul, sending love to you all. Can’t believe it. My heart is broken. He will live on always in song," wrote a fan. "Truly one of the best to ever do it and most certainly one of the most kind and generous humans I ever had the pleasure of sharing a stage with. Much love to Raul’s family, friends, band, and fans," said artist Nakia

Malo's contributions to music extended beyond entertainment. He championed music education, inspiring countless children across America and throughout the world. His family echoed this sentiment in their statement, reflecting on the joy and passion he brought to life, music, and his community.

"Though his earthly body may have passed, Raul’s spirit will live on forever in heaven, and here on earth through the music, joy, and light he brought forth," the band told People. “His contributions to American and Latin music will be everlasting, as his songs and voice touched fans and fellow artists around the world."

His spirit and artistry will continue to resonate, reminding everyone to savor every moment and inspiring future generations through the powerful connection of his songs.
