Patrick Mahomes continues rehab and moves closer to a potential return for the 2026 NFL season.
Okay, Chiefs Kingdom…we finally got some good news. And yes, go ahead and clap it up, because the stress levels in Kansas City just dropped a little.
Whew!
After months of uncertainty following that devastating late-2025 injury, Patrick Mahomes is officially back in motion.
As of April 20, 2026, the Kansas City quarterback is actively rehabbing both a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee, and according to head coach Andy Reid, things are looking up.

"He’s doing great," Reid told reporters during offseason workouts. "He goes to meetings, he can lift, do all of that, rehab… we’ll just play it by ear and see where he’s at. He’s doing great, but we just have to be smart with this thing."
And honestly? That’s exactly what Kansas City needed to hear.
Mahomes, who suffered the injury on December 14, 2025, has already been spotted putting in real work behind the scenes. He’s attending team meetings, lifting, and even started throwing again as early as March. In a video posted on March 25, Mahomes was seen tossing a football on turf while wearing a black brace on his left leg, a moment that had fans collectively exhaling.
Because if you know, you know.

The current timeline still puts his recovery in that 9–12 month range, which means a return around the 2026 season opener in September is the goal, but not a guarantee. Reid has made it clear the team isn’t rushing anything, even if Mahomes is ahead of schedule.
And let’s be real for a second, as much as fans want him back Week 1, Kansas City also knows what’s at stake long-term.
Right now, the outlook is basically a toss-up. There’s roughly a 50/50 chance Mahomes could be under center for the first snap of the 2026 season. Some projections even place it slightly under that, around a 48.5% probability. The team brought in Justin Fields as a safety net, which gives the Chiefs room to be patient, and honestly, that might be the smartest move.
From a fan perspective? It’s hard, but it’s necessary.
Because rushing a franchise quarterback like Mahomes back too early just isn’t worth it. Not when you’re thinking bigger than Week 1. Not when you’re thinking dynasty.
What matters most is this – progress is happening. The energy is shifting. And for the first time since that injury, hope feels real again.
Chiefs Kingdom is still standing strong. Still loud. Still believing. And whenever Mahomes comes back, whether it’s Week 1 or a little later, he’s coming back different. Stronger. And still that guy!
