What Is the Tournament and Who’s on the Team? 

If you’re new to all this, TGL isn’t your traditional golf setup – it’s a tech-driven, fast-paced league designed to bring golf into a more modern, prime-time spotlight. Matches are played in a simulator-based arena with real golfers hitting into a massive screen, then transitioning to a physical green for short game shots. It’s part sport, part experience, and fully built for entertainment.

Its basiclally like playing golf on your Wii or virtual world golf. 

TGL was created to shorten the game, speed up the action, and keep fans engaged the whole time. Think less four-hour rounds, more upspeed, and less boring if you ask us! But also features a shot clock, team format, and playoff-style intensity. The league was officially announced in 2022, but it didn’t start playing real matches until January 2025, which was its first (inaugural) season.

When it comes to the Los Angeles Golf Club, this isn’t just a random roster – they came stacked.

The team features top-tier golfers like Collin Morikawa, known for his precision and calm under pressure, alongside Justin Rose, a veteran presence with years of elite-level experience. They’re also backed by talent like Tommy Fleetwood and Sahith Theegala, bringing a mix of consistency, energy, and clutch play to the lineup.

Off the course, the ownership group adds even more star power. The team is co-owned by Serena Williams, Venus Williams, and Alexis Ohanian – a trio that blends sports legacy, business strategy, and cultural influence.

What Happened at the Tournament 

Facing off against New York in a high-pressure TGL championship matchup, the night started with both teams trading early momentum. LA came out aggressive in the opening holes, landing clean approach shots and setting up makeable putts, but New York answered right back with precision off the tee, keeping the score tight from the jump.

One of the first turning points came midway through when LA nailed a clutch long-range putt that completely shifted the energy in the arena.

From there, it turned into a back-and-forth battle. New York responded with a strong drive-and-approach sequence that led to a tied hole, forcing LA to stay sharp. And they did, locking in defensively with smart shot placement instead of trying to overplay the moment.

Another key moment came late in regulation when LA executed a near-perfect approach shot that landed within a few feet of the pin, setting up a pressure putt to keep them in it. With neither side backing down, the match pushed into overtime, and that’s where LA Golf Club really separated themselves.

In OT, it came down to execution under pressure. LA delivered a clean tee shot followed by a controlled approach that gave them a clear advantage on the green, while New York struggled to match the placement. That opened the door for LA to close it out with a confident final putt that sealed the championship.

They didn’t fold. That’s what champions do!

There’s been a lot of talk about whether leagues like TGL can really compete with traditional golf. But according to sports commentary, that’s not even the right question.

They’re not trying to replace golf.

They’re trying to repackage it.

Shorter formats, bright visuals, heavy tech integration. It’s all designed to keep eyes locked in. And with a team like Los Angeles Golf Club delivering a championship performance this early, it’s clear the formula is working.

Still, not everyone is completely convinced.

"$9 million for a simulator league? I guess if you have enough LED screens… anything can feel like the Masters."

Serena Williams & Ownership 

While the Los Angeles Golf Club handled business on the course, the ownership group brought just as much presence off it, and that starts with Serena Williams.

Co-owning the team alongside her sister Venus Williams and entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian, Serena is part of a new wave of athletes stepping into ownership while they’re still actively shaping sports culture. 

Each team will feature three PGA TOUR golfers, with rosters to be finalized before the league kicks off in early 2025 at a purpose-built arena in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

Ohanian, who previously helped launch LA-based NWSL team Angel City FC, explained the vision behind the club, saying, "We see tremendous opportunities to leverage technology to bring golf closer to its fans and to provide an immersive and interactive experience that will captivate both seasoned golf enthusiasts and new fans."

He added a personal touch, highlighting the family connection.

"My wife Serena and I have enjoyed as Olympia has taken a liking to golf, so I’m proud to announce that they’re both owners in this club as well – as is the little one on the way! This is another piece of the legacy I’m building for my family and I hope this team can become a part of many families’ lives, too."

With this combination of elite athletes, tech-minded entrepreneurship, and a focus on fan engagement, LAGC is setting itself up as more than just a team. It’s a vision for how golf can evolve, entertain, and inspire a new generation.
