Amber Afzali shines in 'Rule Breakers,' portraying Esin, a member of Afghanistan's first all-girls robotics team. Her performance brings depth and authenticity to a character who defies expectations and fights for change.
Rule Breakers has been creating a lot of buzz since its release (March 7), especially with its timing around International Women’s Day. This inspiring film tells the true story of Afghanistan's first all-girls robotics team and sheds light on the strength and resilience of women in the face of the Taliban’s oppression. It’s a powerful and emotional story that resonates with so many, and it’s been heartwarming to see the reception it has recieved.
Amber Afzali, who plays Esin, brings more than just acting talent to the role. As the daughter of Afghan immigrant parents, she brings a personal connection to the story.
“It’s something that’s very near and dear to my family’s heart, as well as mine,” she told Fandom Daily. "I was in awe that Hollywood was making a film about Afghanistan that wasn't focused on war or a bleak narrative. Instead, it showcased a hopeful story and presented women in a positive light – something that is still somewhat rare in Hollywood."
The film follows Roya Mahboob (Nikohl Boosheri), the visionary behind the team, who dares to teach young girls in Afghanistan to dream beyond the constraints placed upon them. When their innovation draws global attention, it sparks both hope and opposition. As they face increasing threats, their courage and unity ignite a movement that has the potential to transform the world. The film showcases the indomitable spirit of the robotics team while also highlighting the high stakes for those who challenge the restrictions imposed on women in a country where their rights are under threat.
In an exclusive Q&A with Fandom Daily, Amber opens up about her role in the film, her experience working with the cast and crew, and what’s next in her exciting career journey.
Fandom Daily: To kick things off, let's talk about your recent projects and your involvement in Rule Breakers. Tell us more about that and what the process has been like for you?
Amber Afzali: "Rule Breakers is an incredible film based on the inspiring true story of an all-girls Afghan robotics team. It focuses on their journey out of Afghanistan with Roy and Oop, the visionary who led the team. She created the team and brought STEM to girls in Afghanistan. I actually knew about the story before even getting the audition, and it’s something that’s very near and dear to my family’s heart, as well as mine. It was especially meaningful because Hollywood was making a film about Afghanistan that wasn't focused on war or a bleak narrative. Instead, it showcased a hopeful story and presented women in a positive light with lead roles and speaking parts, which is still somewhat rare in Hollywood. I was in awe that they were making this film.
The process itself happened pretty quickly. It was my first audition after getting back into the industry. After a couple of callbacks and a chemistry read, just two or three months later, I found out that I was going to play Acid."
Fandom Daily: That’s amazing! When you found out, how did you feel?
Amber Afzali: "I was in Philly at the time, leaving a cinema after watching The Northman, and I saw I had a missed call from my manager, Deborah Lynn. Unfortunately, she has passed away now, but she was incredible. She called me and said, “Are you ready to go to Romania and Ireland?” Those were the filming locations, and I just couldn’t believe it. I was so excited, I literally thought she was joking at first. But she was serious, and I was through the moon. The first thing I did was FaceTime my parents to record their reactions. They were so happy, and I was on cloud nine. I didn’t feel any pressure at that point, just pure excitement. I wanted to portray the girls authentically and in a beautiful light, but mostly, I was just so grateful to be part of such a special project."
Fandom Daily: Stepping on set and working on the film, did you grow closer to the story as you went along? Did it resonate with you even more?
Amber Afzali: "Yes, definitely. Being on set is such a unique experience. At the time, this was my first audition in a while, and I didn’t have the typical experience of auditioning many times before landing a role. Looking back now, being on set was one of the most rewarding experiences. The environment and the people around you shape your performance in such a special way. We filmed in Morocco and Budapest, and being in new environments really changed the way we approached the story. I think the fun of being on set and showcasing creativity really comes alive when you’re able to work with other actors and immerse yourself in that world."
Fandom Daily: Tell us about your experience working alongside the cast and crew?
Amber Afzali: "Working with the cast was incredible. It was my first time on set, so I was surrounded by both experienced actors and those at a similar level as me, which was a cool dynamic. The chemistry between us was real, and that’s something that people have mentioned when watching the film. We’re all still close and in touch. I still message Nina, Sarah, and Norine regularly. On set, it was great to be surrounded by people with shared cultural backgrounds and experiences, which made connecting with them even more special.
Phoebe Waller-Bridge was amazing. She’s effortlessly funny, and we had the chance to talk about video games, which was a fun connection. Little did I know, she was working on a new Tomb Raider series for Amazon, and I was talking to her about the game just before it was announced. It was surreal when I saw that news break!
The crew in Morocco was like family. They treated us with so much warmth and love, almost like an aunt who checks in on you. The culture there was so welcoming, and then we went to Budapest, which had a completely different vibe. The people were polite, respectful, and equally lovely, just a different cultural approach. Working with such diverse crews was an amazing experience, and the director and producers were fantastic. We were lucky to have a strong female perspective throughout the project."
Fandom Daily: How have fans been responding to the film, especially your character? Has anyone reached out to you saying you’ve inspired them?
Amber Afzali: "Honestly, it’s crazy to think about the concept of “fans,” but the response has been amazing. Audiences have really connected with Acid’s story arc and her journey of finding her voice. It resonates with a lot of people, especially girls who have expectations placed on them and must defy those expectations to become who they truly want to be. Many girls who have seen the film have expressed that they’re considering pursuing STEM careers or have already been inspired to continue their journey in STEM. It’s been beautiful to see how this film has inspired them.
We’ve also had Afghan refugees reach out after seeing the film. For them, it’s deeply emotional because so much of what my character experiences and says mirrors their own reality. It’s been so rewarding to see that connection, and I’m really grateful for the positive impact it’s had."
Fandom Daily: What’s next for you? Can you share any upcoming projects or what’s coming down the line?
Amber Afzali: "Right now, I can’t share too much, but there are definitely some exciting things coming. I’m really happy with how Rule Breakers has been received, especially since it’s my first project. We’re still in the promotional phase, and it’s being shown in government spaces and universities, which is incredible. I’m trying to stay present with this project and enjoy the moment, but I’m excited for what’s next. I’ve always had an interest in law, but now I’m fully committed to this industry, and I’m excited for everything that lies ahead. There’s a lot to look forward to, and I can’t wait to share it all soon."
