We all love our pets, but Supergirl loves hers just a little more.
The first official trailer for Supergirl has been released giving us a closer look into the life of Superman's slightly unginged cousin (Milly Alcock). Following up on the success of Superman (2025), Supergirl will be the second installment in the DCU with a spin on the classic Superman origin story.
Whereas Superman was jettisoned off of his crumbling planet, Krypton, and eventually found and raised by good-natured American farmers, Supergirl was jettisoned off of Krypton, not found by anyone, and left to fend for herself. She is not entirely alone in her travels though. She has her companion, Krypto, a dog with super abilities as well, who as it turns out, will play a major role in this movie. In fact, Krypto's presence is what will drive the entire plot.
The movie will be largely based on the 2021 comic run Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow which introduced us to two characters with prominent roles in the movie, Ruthye Marye Knoll (Eve Ridley), a young warrior who teams up with Supergirl to hunt down the main antagonist of the movie, Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts.) The main story will revolve around Krypto who is poisoned by Krem and with only three days to live, Supergirl and Ruthye team up to hunt down Krem, retrieve the antidote, and save her companion. The two aren't alone though as the trailer finally gives us a good look at one of the more talked about characters from the movie, Lobo portrayed by Jason Momoa.
Lobo is an alien bounty hunter who has been a fan-favorite character since his inception. Casting Momoa for the role was a no-brainer as the actor and the character look nearly the same already.
"I'm still amazed at how Momoa as Lobo is just such perfect casting," said one YouTube commentor. "Seeing Jason Momoa finally as Lobo could make a grown man cry," said another.
In an interview with Screenrant, the actor opened up about playing the iconic DC antihero.
"Well, this is the role I've always wanted to play," Momoa said. "That’s the comic I loved, so I'm really nervous about it. It’s kind of a no-brainer to play this character. It's pretty big. I don't want to give away too much, but I mean, we look pretty dead on, exactly like the character, and he’s pretty rough and gruff and… I'll say the bike’s really cool."
When asked how much screentime Lobo would have he replied, "It’s her movie, so it's great. I just come in for a little bit."
This will be Momoa's second role in a DC movie, as he famously portrayed Aquaman in Zack Snyder's DC movie universe.
As much as fans are excited for this movie, it is a superhero movie, so of course there are some critiques. The main negative feedback revolves around James Gunn's involvement, the new head of DC Studios and general architect of DC movies going forward. Prior to this executive role, Gunn skyrocketed into mainstream success by directing the Guardians of the Galaxy movies for Marvel, DC's largest competitor.
Naturally when he came over to DC in a permanent setting, fans were upset that he would bring the signature sarcastic/lighthearted tone from his movies to DC's "serious" and "brooding" movies. Although Gunn isn't directing Supergirl, Craig Gillespie is handling this one, his influence can be seen throughout. A lot of the character and set designs bear an admittedly familiar look and feel to Gunn's Guardians movies.
"When did Supergirl join Guardians of the Galaxy?," said one comment on DC's Instagram post. "Just redoing gotg 3 are we?," said another.
There have also been a lot of comparisons to the John Wick movies, where a hitman returns to a life of killing after villains kill his beloved puppy. Fans saw the parallels with Krypto and Supergirl stopping at nothing to save him.
"Krypto gets hurt, Supergirl goes full John Wick," said a top YouTube comment.
Overall this movie looks exciting and a perfect follow up to Superman as we've already gotten a taste of Supergirl's character in that movie. There are rumors that more scenes with David Corenswet's Superman have been added to this movie after Superman's success. The two characters have the same origin but polar opposite outcomes, Superman's being more hopeful based on his quality upbringing and Supergirl more cynical from her lack of upbringing, so it'll be interesting to see the two interact even more and play off of each other's differences.
Supergirl arrives in theaters on June 26, 2026.
