Deadpool, the motor mouthed antihero that rose from the depths of cult fandom to mainstream pop culture status, will soon be taking the backseat once again. In an interview with Today's Sunday Sitdown Live, Ryan Reynolds opened up about the character's future.

"I have some stuff kind of written," Reynolds said before adding, "I don't think I'm going to center him again. I think he's a supporting character, you know?" Later on in the interview, Reynolds continued by adding that Deadpool is "a guy that's great in a group."

Reynolds has held onto similar beliefs going back to a 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter where he talked about not wanting to make anymore standalone movies for the character.

"Centering Deadpool works best if you take everything away from him and put his back against the wall. I can’t really do that again. A fourth time feels a little iterative and redundant. That doesn’t mean sacrificing fun. There is still an arc for Deadpool which is fulfilling and powerful."

Deadpool has been featured in three standalone movies, with the most recent being Deadpool & Wolverine' (2024), which officially brought Fox's X-Men franchise into the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the first time. For many superhero movie fans, the merging of the two cinematic universes was a dream come true. So much so, that the movie went to make over $1B at the box office, putting it in the top 25 highest grossing movies of all time. With a record like this, it's safe to say that Deadpool will appear onscreen again, but if not in a standalone movie, then with who? Fans have begun to speculate.

Due to Deadpool and Wolverine's plot revolving around multiverses, fans feel as though Reynold's comments could be a hint at a cameo in Avengers: Doomsday, a movie that has been confirmed to heavily involve the use multiverses.

"Deadpool will return in Avengers Doomsday," commented one fan, poking fun at the teaser text Marvel uses in their credits. Others feel he may up in an X-Force movie, an offshoot team in the X-Men comics where Deadpool actually made his first appearance.

Even some creative ideas have been thrown into the mix. "I still think he should take a Stan lee role and cameo in all the marvel movies," said another.

Marvel recently announced that they would be returning to Hall H at San Diego Comic Con this year. While the focus will most likely be on Avengers: Doomsday, there are rumors and rumblings that we might see some casting news for the upcoming X-Men reboot under Marvel Studios. A freshly rebooted X-Men universe would be the most ideal sandbox for Deadpool to play in.
