Taylor Swift returns to her country roots with a new song for 'Toy Story 5.' Could a re-recording of her debut album be next?
The highly anticipated track will arrive on streaming and digital platforms on Friday, June 5, and will also appear on the
Toy Story 5 soundtrack when the film opens in theaters on June 19.
The song is inspired by the ongoing journey of cowgirl Jessie, a character who first appeared in
Toy Story 2 and returns in this new installment. Musically, Swift taps back into her country roots while blending the stylistic threads that have defined her career, offering a piece meant to reflect Jessie’s emotional arc in the film.
In addition to the standard single, Swift’s official store is offering three exclusive CD editions for pre-order starting today (June 1). Each edition features the version heard in the film plus two alternate takes – a special acoustic version and a special piano version.
Toy Story 5 director and screenwriter
Andrew Stanton praised Swift’s contribution, saying her connection to Jessie and her instant understanding of the character made the song feel essential to the film.
"On first listen, it instantly felt like it had always belonged there, like a long-lost family member. It was kismet," Stanton said in a
statement.
The announcement follows rumors surrounding a potential collaboration, which sent fans into a full-blown investigation. Swifties and Disney Adults treated every promotional detail as a possible Easter egg.
The franchise’s official Instagram account recently posted images of billboards reading "TS," surrounded by 13 white clouds, a detail fans quickly linked to Swift. As we all know, 13 is the hitmaker's lucky number. The same motif appeared again in the post’s caption, intensifying suspicions that the imagery may not be coincidental.
Adding further fuel, the account previously shared a video of Jessie dancing beneath a "TS" billboard, captioned with a phrase fans immediately recognized as a lyrical nod to Taylor's hit "
Shake It Off." While the post appeared playful on the surface, Swifties interpreted it as another Easter egg in what they believe could be a coordinated tease.
The theories first began gaining traction after April 30, when Swift
reportedly posted, then quickly deleted, a countdown on her official site that fans believe carried strong
Toy Story-inspired visual cues, including blue skies, white clouds, and yellow tones reminiscent of the franchise’s branding. That timing also caught attention. The release date of
Toy Story 5, June 19, aligns with the 20th anniversary of Swift’s debut single, a coincidence fans are reluctant to dismiss.
Speculation intensified when another
Toy Story-themed countdown appeared on
TaylorSwift.com, this time featuring Jessie imagery and similar cloud motifs. The timer was set to expire on June 1 at 2:00 PM EST. This specific announcement was the song reveal.
Now, Swifties believe there’s more to come and are floating multiple possibilities. One theory suggests Taylor could voice a new character in the film, marking her first major animated role in the franchise. Others strongly believe she’s teasing a re-recording of her debut album. Especially since the key art for the new track points to her old country aesthetic.
