Selena Gomez has always been an open book, and she recently got candid with her fans about motherhood.

The Only Murders in the Building star recently sat down with Vanity Fair and gave an update on her ongoing health issues. Gomez has been living with lupus disease since 2013 but informed the Selenators about the chronic illness in 2015.

"I was diagnosed with lupus, and I've been through chemotherapy," she told Billboard at that time. "That's what my break was really about. I could've had a stroke."

According to the Mayo Clinic, lupus is a disease that occurs when your body's immune system attacks your own tissues and organs. Symptoms include inflammation and could affect many body systems like the joints, heart, lungs, kidneys, etc.

The award-winning actress and vocalist confessed in the interview, published on Monday (Sept. 9), that it would be too dangerous for her to carry her own children due to her condition.

"I haven't ever said this, but I unfortunately can't carry my own children," said Gomez. "I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby's in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while."

The 32-year-old, who plays a young mother in her latest film Emilia Pérez, didn't delve into specifics about the risks, though she's been open about her lupus diagnosis in the past. In 2017, Gomez also underwent a kidney transplant. The chemotherapy from the lupus treatment could also be a factor, considering it could cause severe complications like organ damage.

It is still possible for women to get pregnant with the disease, but the Lupus Foundation of America claims it does come with higher risks, such as kidney problems, blood clots, and preeclampsia, increasing the chances of complications for both mother and baby.

Despite the challenges, Gomez says she has found peace with the situation and is willing to explore alternative options to become a mother.

"I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me," she confirmed. "It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be moms. I'm one of those people."

Gomez also noted that her mother was adopted, adding, "It doesn't matter how my children come into my life because they'll still be my baby."

Gomez also discussed her relationship with music producer Benny Blanco

Fan Of View: Fans have developed a theory that Gomez's openness about her health struggles and journey toward motherhood will profoundly impact women facing similar challenges. By sharing her vulnerability, particularly about not being able to carry her own children, she may inspire others to embrace alternative paths like surrogacy and adoption.

Some fans believe Gomez is subtly dropping hints that her relationship with Blanco is getting more serious, sparking predictions of a possible engagement in the near future. Her heartfelt comments about their bond – describing Blanco as a "complete light" in her life and someone she deeply trusts – have fueled speculation that the couple may be ready to take the next step.
