A Swiftie is clapping back at Taylor Swift's legal team.

A Florida college student, Jack Sweeney, received a cease-and-desist letter from Swift's camp in December after he was accused of tracking the pop star's private jet. The 21-year-old turned to social media on Monday evening (Feb. 19) to reveal the official documents.

Sweeney first shared the letter his lawyers sent in response to the singer's legal request. He paired the attachment with a cheeky reference to one of Swift's chart-topping albums, Reputation

"Look What You Made Me Do," wrote Sweeney on X (formerly known as Twitter).

The letter addressed Swift's lawyer, Katie Wright Morrone. Morrone initially claimed that the University of Central Florida student engaged in behavior that allegedly threatened Swift's safety by posting details of her jet's whereabouts in real-time on his Instagram account @taylorswiftjets.

Sweeney, who ran the now-inactive Instagram account @taylorswiftjets, did not back down. His lawyers argued that the tracking of Swift's jet was based on publicly available Federal Aviation Administration data, framing it as an exercise of "protected speech" rather than an invasion of privacy or an act of harassment.

James Slater, representing Sweeney, emphasized that their client's actions were lawful, pointing out that similar tracking had been done for jets owned by Russian oligarchs and tech mogul Elon Musk

"There is nothing unlawful about GRNDCTRL's use of publicly accessible information to track private jets, including those used by public figures like Taylor Swift," read the report. "GRNDCTRL used the same information to track sanctioned Russian oligarchs' jets and Elon Musk."

Slater's response dismissed the notion that Sweeney's posts constituted stalking, particularly under California law, as there were no credible threats made against Swift. Sweeney has never made any threats against the GRAMMY Award-winner.

"Your letter makes that clear by failing to identify any legal claim. Only in a footnote to your December 22, 2023 letter do you flirt with asserting a stalking claim under California law – but the language just before the words you quote explains that a stalker is someone who makes a 'credible threat' against a victim,'" he added

Although Sweeney did stop tracking her aircraft on Instagram, he provides updates on other social media platforms. He has another account called Celeb Jets, where he follows other A-listers like Blake Shelton, Tiger Woods, Drake, Jay-Z, Travis Scott, and more. The account has racked in 18.6K followers.

The dispute raises questions about privacy, public information, and the boundaries of fan interest in the age of social media. Sweeney's continued activity on his other account suggests a broader fascination with the travel habits of celebrities, not limited to Swift alone.

This controversy comes amid scrutiny over Swift's carbon footprint, with critics citing her frequent flights. Swift's representatives have noted that her jet is often lent out to others. Amidst the ongoing debate, Swift reportedly sold one of her two private jets, a move confirmed by FAA records.

As the legal debacle unfolds, it continues to spark discussions on privacy rights, freedom of speech, and the environmental responsibilities of public figures. The legal dispute between Taylor Swift's team and Jack Sweeney has split fans into two camps. One side views Sweeney's jet tracking as a harmless display of fandom, arguing that using public data to follow Swift's movements simply expresses devotion. In contrast, others are concerned for Swift's privacy and safety – fearing that sharing her travel details could make her vulnerable to security threats, given her history with stalkers.
