Tom Sandoval, a prominent figure from Vanderpump Rules, has issued an apology following a controversial comment he made during an interview with The New York Times Magazine

In the interview, Sandoval drew a parallel between the media frenzy surrounding his cheating scandal and significant societal events, including the cases of O.J. Simpson and George Floyd. This comparison has sparked widespread criticism and condemnation, especially from fellow Bravo network stars.

The interview was intended to discuss the aftermath of Sandoval's highly publicized affair with co-star Rachel "Raquel" Leviss, which ended his nine-year relationship with Ariana Madix. Sandoval reflected on the magnitude of attention his personal drama received.

"I'm not a pop-culture historian, really," claimed Sandoval. "But I witnessed the O.J. Simpson thing and George Floyd and all these big things, which is really weird to compare this to that, I think, but do you think in a weird way it's a little bit the same?"

Shortly after the feature story was published, Bravoholics and the Black stars from the network came out of the woodwork to express their thoughts and concerns. Real Housewives of Miami star Guerdy Abraira and Jordan Emanuel from Summer House criticized Sandoval's remarks, particularly noting the inappropriateness of comparing a personal scandal to profoundly tragic and racially charged events. Sandoval's co-star Katie Maloney even shared her anger.

"The disrespect…and on Black History Month. WOW, JUST PLZ," stressed Abraira. "@tomsandoval1 PLEASE reflect on this repulsive statement you made (regarding GEORGE FLOYD r.i.p), especially on black history month, and take it back!! NOT OK! An immediate apology is in order, sir."

According to PEOPLE, Vanderpump Rules executive producer/showrunner Alex Baskin contacted the NYT reporter Irina Aleksander after the interview to ask questions.

"Everyone was concerned," recalled Aleksander. "What was it that he said about O.K. Simpson and George Floyd? Maybe Sandoval wasn't ready for this," Baskin asked.

Following the backlash, Sandoval retracted his statement, apologizing for the comparison. He clarified that he intended to convey the level of media attention his affair garnered, not to equate his situation with those of Simpson or Floyd – nor to minimize the gravity of their cases.

"My intentions behind the comments I made in New York Times Magazine were to explain the level of national media attention my affair received," Sandoval attempted to explain. "The comparison was inappropriate and ignorant. I'm incredibly sorry and embarrassed."

The controversy extended beyond these comparisons, with Sandoval also mentioning convicted rapist Danny Masterson in an attempt to contextualize the backlash he faced. These comments have only added to the criticism from the public and his peers.

"I feel like I got more hate than Danny Masterson, and he's a convicted rapist," said the reality star about the former That 70s Show actor. Masterson was recently sentenced to 30 years to life in prison. "I did what I did because I was in an unhappy place in my life. I got caught up in my emotions and fully fell in love," he added.

Fans predict a complex future for both Sandoval and the Vanderpump Rules series. This theory arises from the collective anger and disappointment of fans and co-stars alike, suggesting that Sandoval's remarks could significantly alter the dynamics of the show and its audience's engagement. This has not only tarnished his image but also brought into question his awareness and sensitivity towards significant issues.
