Travis Kelce secretly proposed to Taylor Swift weeks before their Instagram announcement, and his dad shared the sweet details of the romantic garden proposal.
Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are officially engaged, but according to Travis' father, Ed Kelce, the magical moment actually occurred weeks before the couple made it public.
While the engagement was announced on Instagram on August 26, Ed told ABC News 5 Cleveland that Travis popped the question nearly two weeks earlier.
"Travis actually did the proposal maybe two weeks – not quite two weeks ago," Ed revealed. He explained that his son had originally considered waiting to make the moment a grand, public event. But after some advice from Ed and Taylor's father, Scott Swift, Travis realized that a proposal can be special anywhere.
"He was going to put it off till this week. I think she was getting maybe a little antsy, but he was going to put her off till this week, to, you know, make some grand thing, to make it a big special event, " he shared. "And I told him repeatedly, you know, you could do it on the side of the road, do it any place that makes it a special event ... when you get down on one knee and ask her to marry you."
And special it was. Travis, 35, asked Taylor, also 35, to marry him at his home in Lee's Summit, Missouri. According to Ed, Travis created a beautiful floral garden around a gazebo just for the occasion.
"He got her out there, they were about to go out to dinner, and he said, 'Let's go out and have a glass of wine,'" explained Ed. "They got out there, and that's when he asked her, and it was beautiful."
After the proposal, the couple FaceTimed their families to share the exciting news. Ed recalled getting the call while attending the Philadelphia Eagles' public practice on August 10, just three days before the release of Taylor's New Heights podcast episode.
"They started FaceTiming me and their mother and her folks to make sure everybody knew. So, to see them together is great," he said. "As soon as I saw the FaceTime, I saw it was Travis, and then I saw Taylor there with him. I knew what they were going to say, and they let us know."
Ed said he already feels Taylor belongs in the family. In fact, he thought the record-breaking athlete was going to pop the question during last year's NFL Season. He continued to gush about their unbreakable bond and love for eachother. Ed said that he has never seen his son happier than he is with the singer-songwriter.
"We actually went to a thing in KC Sunday night, which was an ESPN airing of 'The Kingdom' and went to that, and his mother and I went with him back to his house for dinner, where Taylor made dinner, and we had a wonderful dinner with them outside on the patio and to just watch the two of them, just crazy about each other. It's truly kinda neat," Ed said.
The couple's engagement photos, shared on Instagram, captured their joy perfectly. Posing in a garden of pink and white flowers, Taylor showed off her sparkling diamond ring, while the couple captioned the carousel, "Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married."
Fans quickly flooded the comments with love and congratulations for the happy couple.
Fans have had mixed reactions to Ed sharing the engagement details. Some believe it's unusual for a parent to reveal such private moments, feeling that the couple should control the narrative.
Others argue that Taylor herself would likely keep the intimate details private, and while Travis might hint at it on New Heights, this level of detail is unexpected. Regardless, fans are over the moon for the couple, describing the proposal – including the gazebo and floral garden – as "sweet, romantic, and perfectly normal."
