Universal Studios Japan may get some new Pokémon-themed attractions before expanding to other Universal parks internationally.
Universal Studios Japan and the Pokémon company have reportedly signed a new deal together that will "offer more innovative, immersive, and world-class Pokémon experiences," according to The Hollywood Reporter. As of now, details about these new additions haven't been disclosed.
President of the Pokémon Company, Tsunekazu Ishihara said "As Pokémon celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, we are thrilled to launch this new project at such a significant milestone. Our mission is to enrich both the real and virtual worlds through Pokémon, and with this project, we aim to create theme park entertainment that surprises and delights fans around the globe.”
The Pokémon Company and Universal Studios Japan first collaborated in 2021 with the inclusion of Pokémon into Universal Japan's parades and other shows. This recent deal is reportedly larger – potentially bringing attractions such as rides or even a dedicated Pokémon land into the mix as well.
Whatever is planned is set align with Pokémon's 30th anniversary next year, so it checks out that they're looking to celebrate in a big way. For now, these experiences will debut in Japan first before expanding to other Universal parks internationally.
The Pokémon fandom has undergone changes in the past few years, some might say for the worse. From influencers like Logan Paul getting into card collecting solely for financial purposes, to LEGO (finally) releasing Pokémon sets with an astronomical mark up that eventually sold out anyway, Pokémon is becoming more inaccessible to the fans that helped build the brand to what it is today.
A new immersive attraction dedicated to Pokémon would allow diehard fans to interact with their favorite property in a genuine way, without the influence of others trying to exploit it for their own gain.
