Fandom played a big role at The Super Bowl this year and Pokémon made quite the splash. The Pokémon Company launched their 30th Anniversary celebration campaign on the biggest televisted stage with an unexpected Super Bowl commercial.

In it, celebrities like Lady Gaga, Trevor Noah, Jisoo, Lamine Yamal, Charles Leclerc, Young Miko, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan all begin singing praises for someone or something unnamed, only for the reveal to be that they were each talking about their favorite Pokémon the entire time. We've all been there.

In an interview with Variety, Trevor Noah talked about the significance of being involved in this commercial.

"This is one of those moments where you get to reward your childhood self," said Noah. "‘Pokémon’ has been part of my life since the age of 9 or 10. It first came to South Africa in the Pokémon trading card packs. Kids went crazy trading them around. But it really blew up in my life with the Game Boy."

He continued to talk about why he chose Psyduck for the commercial.

"The reason I choose Psyduck is because I grew up as a neurodivergent kid, still figuring out what ADHD does in your brain. When I watched Psyduck in the TV show, it’s this little weirdo in a weird world. Psyduck can’t handle its brain. It’s trying to figure out how things work. It’s the most powerful, then the least powerful. It can literally freeze the whole world, levitate everything and throw it away, but then sometimes it can’t even walk out of a Poké Ball in the right direction. It was the classic tale of of the unlikely hero, the hero that we hope we all have inside us. We don’t expect it, and then against all odds you figure everything out, and you come out on top.”

There it is. Trevor Noah is a confirmed Pokémon fan!

What's significant about the commercial is that aside from each celebrity's different profession, they're noticably different ethnicities, which seems to be the point that the Pokémon Company wants to drive home: Pokémon is for everone.

Launched in tandem with this commercial is a brand new feature in the Pokémon mobile app game, Pokémon GO. Like the commercial, it's aptly titled "What's Your Favorite?" and it allows fans to take photos of themselves with a Pokémon companion via augmented reality.

Don't worry if your favorite is niche, there are literally hundreds of Pokémon to choose from. Even if you're not a player, you can participate just by downloading the app. Fans are encouraged to share their posts on social media with the hashtag #Pokemon30 and the official Pokémon GO Instagram account will share their favorites.

After scrolling through the initial posts from fans all over the globe, it's very clear that the message of the commercial rings true. Pokémon is indeed for everyone.
