Picture it: Mimi Imfurst decides to do some impromptu weightlifting with India Ferrah during a lip sync. It was like a soap opera on steroids, mama. Mimi and India gained an incredible line to run their fandom: "drag is not a contact sport." But the real drama unfolded when Shangela got the boot, and the whole fandom screamed in unison, "Shangela, you were robbed!"
It became the battle cry for every Drag Race fan who felt the injustice in their drag souls. Behind the scenes in Untucked, we got the legendary "Sugar Daddy monologue" from Shangela, and yet another combative moment from Mimi Imfurst (Season 3 of Untucked, Episode 4.)
Sharon Needles v. Phi Phi O’Hara, “Party City”: (Season 4, Episode 8)
Sharon Needles, the spooky and avant-garde queen with a penchant for pushing boundaries, found herself at the epicenter of the storm. The air was thick with unease as Phi Phi O'Hara, the fiercely competitive pageant queen, clashed with Sharon in a verbal face-off that would become infamous in the Drag Race archives. The atmosphere was charged as the queens prepared for the main stage presentation. The challenge: create a presidential campaign ad that showcased charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent. As the queens prepped their campaigns, Phi Phi, known for her no-nonsense attitude, couldn't resist stirring the cauldron of drama. The werk room became a pressure cooker of emotions as Phi Phi confronted Sharon, accusing her of relying on her shock factor to overshadow a perceived lack of polish. The tension escalated like a firestorm, with Phi Phi's frustration reaching a boiling point. "You're just a Party City queen," Phi Phi spat, the words hanging in the air like venom.
The words seemed to pierce Sharon's stoic exterior, and the atmosphere shifted into a whirlwind of hurt feelings and sharp retorts. The Party City jab, a grenade tossed into the heart of the competition, echoed with the weight of the queens' personal struggles and aspirations. In the ensuing verbal clash, Sharon, unyielding in her commitment to her unique brand of drag, fired back with a retort that would become legendary. "At least I am a showgirl, bitch. Go back to Party City, where you belong!" The room gasped, the echoes of their clash reverberating through the werk room. The rivalry between the two brought on several more rivalries over the seasons, making for dramatic, standout moments from the casts.
Valentina’s “Maskgate” (Season 9, Episode 9):
Lights dimmed, tension thick enough to cut with a stiletto, and the iconic lip sync battle music started to pulse through the room. Season 9 of RuPaul's Drag Race had seen its fair share of drama, but nothing could prepare the world for the moment Valentina stepped into the spotlight, shrouded in mystery behind her bedazzled mask.
The stage was set for a showdown, a battle of lip sync supremacy. As the first beats of the song reverberated through the room, during her lip sync against Nina Bo'nina Brown to Ariana Grande's "Greedy," the enigmatic beauty with a penchant for perfection stood confidently, a vision in red from head to toe. The audience, both in the studio and watching at home, held its breath in anticipation. As the music swelled, Valentina began to move, but something was off. The lyrics seemed to elude her.
A realization swept over the room like an electric shock – Valentina had not prepared for this. The once-confident queen found herself amid a lip sync nightmare. In pure confusion, everyone wondered why she wasn't removing the mask her costume had from her mouth. In a desperate attempt to salvage the performance, RuPaul interrupted the track, a concerned furrow marring her flawless brow. The question hung heavy in the air,
"Valentina, why aren't you lip-syncing? Take that thing off your mouth."
The answer came as a whisper, barely audible, over the audience's gasps. Seven words that would change everything.
"I'd like to keep it on, please."
The room fell into a stunned silence. Valentina, refusing to remove her mask, clung to her illusion, unaware that the mask had become a barrier between her and redemption. RuPaul, the arbiter of drag destiny, pressed for an explanation, her disappointment palpable.
BenDeLaCreme’s Self-Elimination (All Stars Season 3, Episode 6):
In the hallowed halls of RuPaul's Drag Race, All Stars 3 etched its name into the annals of drag history with a twist so unexpected, it left the fandom gasping for breath. The queens, battle-tested and hungry for the coveted crown, stood on the precipice of elimination as the weight of the competition bore down upon them. It was the penultimate episode, and the werk room crackled with tension as the remaining queens prepared for the fateful lip sync that would determine who would advance to the grand finale. Among them, was the incomparable BenDeLaCreme, a force of talent and charisma that had consistently shone bright throughout the competition. As the lip-sync assassin revealed herself, a hush fell over the room. The stage was set for a showdown, glittering with the promise of redemption and the dream of making it to the final round. The music began, a pulsating rhythm that seemed to echo the collective heartbeat of the queens.
BenDeLaCreme, known for her strategic prowess, took the stage with a fire in her eyes, ready to face off against her fellow competitor. The spotlight illuminated her every move, but as the song unfolded, a decision seemed to crystallize in BenDeLaCreme's mind. The unexpected, the unthinkable – she was about to eliminate herself. In a dramatic and unprecedented gesture, BenDeLaCreme seized control of her destiny. The gasps from the other queens mirrored the shockwaves that reverberated through the Drag Race fandom. With a resolute expression, she turned to RuPaul, the arbiter of their drag destinies, and dropped the bombshell that would echo through the ages. The line hit us all:
"I'm going home. I'm choosing to eliminate myself."
The room erupted in disbelief. The queens, the judges, and the audience at home were left in stunned silence as BenDeLaCreme walked away from the lip sync, leaving the crown within reach but choosing to define her narrative. At that moment, the werk room transformed into a stage for a different kind of performance – a statement on self-worth, agency, and the unpredictable nature of drag.
Sasha Velour's Riveting Rose Petal Reveal (Season 9, Episode 14):
Let's talk about a finale that gave us more drama than a telenovela. Sasha Velour's lip sync against the fan-predicted winner, Shea Coulee, was pure artistry - no surprise from Brooklyn's own art queen and Fulbright Scholar. Sasha came out in a bright red, long wig, unusual for her, a bald queen in honor of losing her mother to cancer, already a surprise to the crowd. When she whipped off that wig to reveal a waterfall of rose petals, it was like Shakespeare in drag. A poetic and stunning performance that secured Sasha's spot in Drag Race herstory.
Fan of View: This is truly the most iconic lip-sync in all of herstory. This made way for many other queens to get more creative with their lip-syncs and reveals to not only keep audiences entertained but also to prove that drag is art.
So there you have it, squirrel friends! A whole list worthy of jaw-dropping, wig-snatching, and death-dropping moments from RuPaul's Drag Race. Here's to more charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent! Keep slaying, queens.
