The official trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu is here and there is a lot to talk about.

The movie is directly tied to the massively popular Disney+ series, The Mandalorian, marking the first time a Star Wars Disney+ series has made a jump to the big screen. To say there is a lot riding on Mando's back, is an understatement.

Over the past few years the Star Wars fandom has been on a lifeline. Disney's sequel trilogy did not land with fans, so much so that they're remodeling Galaxy's Edge in Disneyland because of the backlash and disinterest. The Mandalorian was the light in an imploding fandom. It relied on familiar elements from the original movies while introducing a lot of new, namely the adorable Grogu and his relationship to Din Djarin, the titular Mandalorian. The series did a lot to hold onto the attention of many Star Wars fans ready to jump ship, and is now considered one of the gems of Disney's Star Wars library.

The Mandalorian and Grogu originally started as the fourth season of the series, but writing was halted by the 2023 Hollywood labor disputes. It was during this time that Lucasfilm decided to pivot to a feature length movie instead, Star Wars' main bread and butter. As of now, there is no fourth season planned, so there's a very real chance this movie could be the conclusion for our spacefaring duo. Fingers crossed, but so far...the movie does look pretty exciting after this new trailer. After a disappointing Super Bowl ad, it's safe to say the fans agree.

Let's take a deeper dive into the trailer with 5-must see moments.

*Record scratch*

I never thought I'd see the day where Star Wars makes a record scratch joke. The trailer starts cinematically with silhouettes of rebel ships against a setting sun all set to John Williams' ICONIC Star Wars theme, something that's not often included in Disney's standalone movies and series. The music then winds down quickly only to reveal our beloved Grogu causing trouble by pressing buttons on Din Djarin's ship. It's a moment of levity but it actually does a pretty good job of setting the mood. Yes, this is going to feel like the cinematic Star Wars you love, but it will also break typical Star Wars conventions. Playing into expectations and putting a twist on them is kind of what made the series so special in the first place.

First look at Jeremy Allen White's Rotta the Hutt

Jeremy Allen White's involvement in this movie has caused some buzz...but maybe not in a way you'd expect. This trailer gave us the first look at Rotta the Hutt, the character Allen will be voicing. Does that name sound familiar to you? That's because Rotta the Hutt is Jabba the Hutt's son. Yes, hearthrob Jeremy Allen White is playing the son of one of the most notoriously vile aliens in Star Wars. Unfortunately we stilll don't know what he'll sound like. You'll have to attend a screening for that reveal.

Star Wars Callbacks

Director Dave Filoni, also the president of Lucasfilm, is a self professed Star Wars fan if you couldn't tell, so it's no surprise he's bringing his knowledge of past characters, creatures, and gadgets from different aspects of the Star Wars universe to the table for this movie. Here's a quick list of some familiar callbacks spotted from other Star Wars movies and series seen in the trailer.

  • X-Wings - Original trilogy
  • Astromech droid (maybe R2-D2?) - Original and prequel trilogy
  • Zeb Orrelios - Star Wars Rebels
  • Embo - The Clone Wars
  • Snowtroopers - The Empire Strikes Back
  • Grogu's blue cookie - The Mandalorian

Martin Scorsese cameo

In the trailer, Mando bribes a four-armed shopkeeper for some information to which he replies he's closed for the night. If you pay close enough attention, you can hear this alien's New York accent. That's not just anyone delivering those lines though, it's none other than Martin Scorsese. This was confirmed by the official Star Wars account after the trailer premiered. Pure cinema.

Sigourney Weaver joins the Star Wars universe

Sigourney Weaver has officially jumped Alien-themed franchises and will be joining Star Wars for the first time. She is playing a new character named Colonel Ward. We don't know much about her, but based on the Rebel insignia on her jacket and of course her action figure, we can surmise that she was a high ranking member of the Rebel Alliance. Sigourney is a legend, and always puts her all into her roles. She is a much welcome addition to the Star Wars universe.

The Mandalorian and Grogu opens May 22nd in theaters and IMAX.
