In heartbreaking news, Brandon Blackstock, known as the ex-husband of Grammy-winning singer Kelly Clarkson and former stepson of country legend Reba McEntire, has passed away at age 48 after a courageous fight with cancer.

A family representative confirmed the sad news to PEOPLE

"It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away," a rep for the family told the publication. "Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family's privacy during this very difficult time."

Clarkson publicly revealed Blackstock's illness earlier this week, announcing she would postpone her Las Vegas residency to focus on their children, River, 11, and Remington, 9.

In a heartfelt Instagram statement on August 6, Clarkson shared:

"Unfortunately, I need to postpone the remainder of the August Studio Session dates in Las Vegas. While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children’s father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them," she wrote on Instagram.

She thanked fans for their "grace, kindness and understanding" during this challenging period.

Blackstock's family includes four children — River and Remington with Clarkson, and Savannah and Seth from a previous marriage. He became a grandfather in 2022 when Savannah gave birth to her son, Lake. The family maintained close ties despite past challenges. In March 2024, Blackstock was spotted at the Houston Rodeo with his children and his brother Shelby, alongside Shelby's mother, Reba McEntire, who was previously married to Brandon's father, Narvel Blackstock.

Brandon's life was closely intertwined with country and pop music royalty. His father, Narvel, once managed Clarkson's career, and Blackstock himself managed artists including Blake Shelton, alongside his former wife Kelly Clarkson. The couple met back in 2006 and married in 2013. Clarkson's emotional 2015 hit "Piece By Piece" was inspired by the stability Brandon brought to her life.

However, their relationship later became complicated, leading to a highly publicized divorce finalized in 2022. The separation included legal battles over their Montana ranch and financial disputes involving management commissions and payments.

Despite their past struggles, fans and supporters have rallied around both Blackstock's family and Clarkson during this difficult time. Many expressed heartfelt sympathy on social media, honoring his strength throughout his illness and offering support to Clarkson and their children.

One fan wrote, "Sending love and strength to Kelly and the family. Brandon was clearly loved deeply, and we're all holding them in our hearts." Another added, "It's so hard to see someone fight so bravely. Rest in peace, Brandon."

Brandon Blackstock is survived by his children, Seth, Remington, Savannah, and River. Also, his grandson, Lake, his father, Narvel, and siblings, Shelby, Shawna, and Chassidy.
