Award-winning actress Cynthia Erivo shares her desire to portray Storm in the MCU. Known for her powerhouse roles, fans are buzzing about whether she’s the perfect fit for the iconic hero.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) might be on the verge of a storm – literally.
Award-winning actress Cynthia Erivo recently revealed that her dream role is none other than the X-Men's iconic weather-wielding mutant, "Storm."
In a candid interview with NBR, Erivo shared her aspirations to join Marvel's superhero pantheon.
"I really want to play Storm. I know it sounds frivolous, but I think we haven't uncovered how grand she is, and all of that inner turmoil that she has," the actress explained. "So, I think there's a world in which we could, you know, do something like that.”
Fresh off her spellbinding performance as Elphaba in Wicked, Erivo is clearly reaching for the stars – or perhaps the skies. With the MCU gradually introducing the X-Men, her timing couldn’t be more perfect.
Casting the Perfect Storm? Fans Weigh In
The announcement has whipped up a whirlwind of reactions on social media. While some fans see Erivo as the perfect fit, others are less convinced:
"Cynthia as Storm couldn't be more perfect of a casting; she could provide an emotional gravitas to the character never seen before," one wrote on social media. "Cynthia doesn't fit the character. We need an actor with a commanding presence Storm gives off. She's great, but she's not it," another one added.
Clearly, the debate is brewing, with opinions as divided as mutant allegiances.
Storm, also known as Ororo Munroe, is a beloved and complex character in the Marvel universe. A mutant with the power to control the weather, she’s a goddess-like figure who commands both respect and fear. Portrayed by Halle Berry in the early X-Men films and by Alexandra Shipp in later adaptations, Storm’s potential MCU debut is one of the most highly anticipated moments in Marvel’s next phase.
Erivo’s passion for the role isn’t surprising given her history of portraying powerful, multidimensional characters. From her Oscar-nominated turn as Harriet Tubman in Harriet to her electrifying performances on stage and screen, the British actress has built a reputation for bringing depth and authenticity to her roles.

Erivo's journey to Hollywood stardom is paved with accolades and powerhouse performances. She first gained widespread recognition for her Academy Award-nominated portrayal of Harriet Tubman in the 2019 biopic, Harriet. Her performance captured the courage, spirituality, and resilience of the historical figure, earning her nominations for Best Actress and Best Original Song at the Oscars. The song, “Stand Up,” which she co-wrote and performed, was an anthem of hope and strength, cementing her reputation as a multifaceted talent.
Erivo’s career spans stage and screen, with a Tony Award for her role as Celie in The Color Purple on Broadway, which also brought her a Grammy and a Daytime Emmy, placing her one step away from EGOT status.
Her versatility has been showcased in a range of films, including the gripping thriller Bad Times at the El Royale, The Fallen Sun, and her enchanting performance as the Blue Fairy in Pinocchio. With each role, Erivo has proven her ability to command attention and bring depth to every character she portrays.
These accolades make her an undeniable force in Hollywood, and her passion for transformative roles could make her a game-changer in the Marvel Cinematic Universe if given the chance to play Storm.
It’s no secret that Marvel fans are fiercely protective of their favorite characters, and casting Storm is a decision that will spark debate no matter who lands the role. Erivo’s recent comments have planted a seed of possibility—now it’s up to Marvel to decide if she’ll be the one to summon lightning in the MCU.
