Britney Spears was arrested Wednesday night (March 4) in Ventura County, Calif., on suspicion of driving under the influence, law enforcement records and media reports confirm.

The 44-year-old pop star was taken into custody by the California Highway Patrol around 9:28 p.m., booked at 3:02 a.m., and released at 6:07 a.m. Thursday (March 5), according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s inmate record. A court date has been set for May 4.

Spears’s representative, Cade Hudson, called the episode "an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable,” and said the singer “is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time."

Hudson added that her sons "are going to be spending time with her" and that loved ones will "come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well-being," statements provided to Page Six.

A source told the outlet that she was emotional during the booking and is worried about what her fandom will think.

"She doesn’t want to let anyone down, including her fans," the insider added. "The last thing she wants is to be judged publicly all over again."

The arrest has intensified concerns among fans about a pattern of troubling driving incidents. In recent months and years, Spears has attracted attention for several episodes of dangerous driving. A widely circulated video obtained by the Daily Mail last year showed a car leaving a Thousand Oaks restaurant and allegedly swerving and tailgating on the drive home.

However, Spears later claimed that she was not the driver, calling the footage a “lookalike” situation. At the time, the restaurant manager defended her, telling Us Weekly she was “super chill and really nice” and “not intoxicated,” though bystanders had claimed otherwise.

"She just kind of hung out, grabbed a bite to eat, and left," Oliver Wynn told the publication. He explained that the popstar didn’t order alcohol with her quesadilla, but fans bought her a glass of wine.

Fans, long known as the "Britney ARMY," are torn between anger and alarm. Many have expressed disappointment that her alleged behavior could put others in danger, while others say their main concern is for her health and stability.

Many have pointed to the unusual dancing videos she’s been posting lately…something that’s long been a signature part of Britney’s Instagram, but some fans feel the recent clips have been more bizarre than usual.

It wasn’t surprising to followers when she deleted her Instagram after the reported DUI incident, since Spears has often wiped her account when negative headlines surface. Now, with reports of family members stepping in following the arrest, some fans worry the situation could lead to renewed discussions about a conservatorship – something Spears spent years fighting to end.

Fans now hope that she recognizes if something is wrong and seeks help sooner rather than later. How do you feel about this situation? Let us know your Fan of View below or on Instagram @fandomdaily_.
