Fandom Daily caught up with Greylan James after his electrifying set at The Gramercy Theatre in New York City, where he discussed his heartfelt single "Wait Til You Have Kids" and what's next for him.
Greylan James, a name that may be relatively new to some listeners, has already made a significant impact in the country music scene. The Big Machine Label Group recording artist has built a strong foundation as a hit songwriter, and now, he's taking the stage as a solo performer.
The Knoxville native, known for his raw talent and heartfelt lyrics, has credits with notable names in the country community. From award-winning artists Kenny Chesney, Hootie & The Blowfish lead singer Darius Rucker, Cole Swindell, newcomers Breland, Bailey Zimmerman, and many more. However, he most recently gained attention when he co-wrote Jordan Davis' hit "Next Thing You Know," which reached No. 1 on the country charts.
The success of that powerhouse song brought him recognition across the industry, earning him several accolades. For instance, a 2024 ACM Award, a 2024 BMI Award, and a 2023 CMA Award nomination. For James, seeing his hard work and dedication pay off as a songwriter was incredibly fulfilling.
"When you're writing songs, you're pouring your heart into them, hoping they'll connect with people," James exclusively told Fandom Daily backstage at the Ashley Cooke concert in New York City. "But when something like 'Next Thing You Know' goes to No. 1, it feels like all the late nights, all the hustle, finally paid off. It's the best feeling in the world."
Despite the recognition he received for his songwriting, James was always determined to carve out his own path as a performer. Now, with his single "Wait Til You Have Kids" set to hit country radio, James is ready to show fans another side of himself. "Wait Til You Have Kids" was released in late January, and it might just be one of the most powerful tracks of the year.
The lyrics, penned by James and Matt Roy, touch upon parenthood and urge listeners to understand that they won't fully grasp the depth of love, responsibility, and sacrifice until they have children of their own. The guitar-driven track perfectly complements his radio-ready vocals, which will have you singing along.
"This song means so much to me because it's something I've lived through in a way. I'm not a parent, but I've seen firsthand what it's like to watch the people you love navigate parenthood," James explains. "I wanted to write something that would really resonate with parents, something that would tug at their heartstrings."
When the song went viral on social media, James immediately reached for his phone to call his mom – eager to share the news. Capturing her raw reaction over FaceTime, the moment showcased their unbreakable bond and the unconditional support they've always shared. This heartwarming connection mirrors the themes of love and family expressed in the track.
His mother's reaction reinforces how deeply his parents have been there for him throughout his journey, just like the song portrays the transformative impact of having kids.
"When I played the song for my parents, their reaction was everything I could have hoped for," he recalled. "They were surprised, and honestly, I was too. It was personal. I wanted them to hear it and know how much their lessons and how they raised me influenced this song. Just seeing my parents, the people that raised me, the people that gave me this opportunity to chase my dream, to see them react to a song like that was truly crazy. I'm very thankful for them," he added.
James' parents weren't the only ones moved by "Wait Til You Have Kids." The must-watched artist has been receiving messages from fans, particularly parents. While many have shared that the song speaks to their own experiences, others are calling the track the next "Next Thing You Know" or part two of the smash hit.
"The reaction has been incredible. I never expected the song to resonate with so many people. I'm getting messages from parents telling me how much it's meant to them, how it made them think about their own journeys as parents," he says. "It's been amazing to hear that. I'm not a parent myself, but to see people connect with the song in such a deep way reminds me why I write music in the first place."
Despite his growing success as a solo artist, James hasn't forgotten where he came from or the importance of his songwriting roots. James mentioned that he's always looking to learn and grow as a performer, so he frequently turns to Ashley Cooke or other musicians in the genre for guidance.
"Ashley is such a great person, and touring with her has been such an eye-opening experience," James shares. "Her crowds are amazing, and they really connect with her songs. I've learned a lot from her, and it's been so cool to see how she interacts with her fans. I want to bring that same energy when I perform – let people know that we're all here for a good time."
James reflects on his career within the close-knit country scene, emphasizing that building a genuine connection with fans begins with authentic songwriting.
"I've been fortunate to work with so many incredible songwriters and artists over the years, and every experience has shaped me into the artist I am today. One thing I've learned from people like Old Dominion and Kenny Chesney is that it's not just about the music – it's about the connection. You write songs that people can live their lives to, songs that make them feel something. When I'm performing, I want to give people that same connection that I felt when I was growing up listening to country music."
As James prepares to release his first single to country radio, he's already thinking ahead to the future. He shared with Fandom Daily that he has no plans of slowing down, urging fans to stay tuned for some exciting surprises ahead.
"I have a lot of music ready to go. This is just the beginning for me," he says with a smile. "I'm excited to share more of my journey with my fans and see where this road takes me. It's been an incredible ride so far, and I know there's more to come."
James' evolution from hit songwriter to rising country artist has been one to watch, and with "Wait Til You Have Kids" gaining traction, he's poised for even greater success.
