James Gunn Addresses Fan Expectations about the DCU's Batman

The costume plays a big part, but the story always comes first.

The all-new DCU, helmed by DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn, had a monumental debut with the release of Superman (2025), but fans are still itching for any information about this universe's take on Batman. The Brave and the Bold is an upcoming Batman movie set to take place in this fresh universe, but little has been revealed to the public about any aspect of it. James Gunn took to Threads recently to set some expectations about his universe's take on the Caped Crusader.

“The most requested thing would be the blue and grey. Then the yellow around the bat. And THEN the white eyes. But all of those things I find less important than the character himself, the writing, and the person who plays him." He then continued, “Individuals are making clear what they want to see. But even the most requested thing – the blue and grey – is split evenly with people who don’t want that. And the other two most requested things are also things just as many people say they don’t want to see. So you have to do what’s right by the specific film and story.”

In a world of ever-growing Fortnite skins and generative AI making videos of beloved characters doing well... anything, there has been an emphasis from fans on what a piece of media looks like, rather than the substance of the story behind it. James Gunn doesn't seem to want to succumb to this pressure, to make Batman look a certain way just because a group of vocal fans are asking for it. He understands that the story is first and foremost the most important aspect of his work.

Since his new role at DC Studios, Gunn has been very vocal about the quality of the movies the studio intends to put out. The studio even shelved a project, which was greenlit and ready to be filmed, because he felt the script wasn't right. This attention to quality makes sense when you think about it. Before the announcement of the DCU, the DCEU, aka "The Snyderverse", was plagued with a myriad of issues, including rushed timelines and conflicting creative visions. By not rushing productions and leaving the story planning to a Superhero movie visionary, it seems that the powers at be don't want to repeat their shortcomings. The DCU seems to be in more careful and intentional hands.
