Joe Jonas: "If this body of work helps people through what they're going through, that's all I can really wish for."
Joe Jonas is setting the record straight about his upcoming album, Music for People Who Believe in Love. The forthcoming project is slated to be released on October 18, more than a decade after his debut solo project, Fastlife. The popstar confessed that the collection is all about
In a recent interview with Billboard, Jonas opened up about his true motive behind the process – confirming that he's "not trying to come" for ex-wife Sophie Turner. He explained that the writing process was a breeze, as it came together in just two and a half weeks.
When Jonas announced the project last month (July 17), many Jonas Brother fans thought he would blast the Game of Thrones star. However, he confirmed that that was not the case.
"It was scary at times, and also freeing," the singer told the outlet. "I'm not trying to come for anyone on this album. I'm trying to put stuff on blast. I have a beautiful life that I'm grateful for. I've got two beautiful kids. I'm a happy person, and the music needed to resemble that – but also, the journey to get here."
The last few months have been a rollercoaster ride for Jonas, as his divorce from Turner was in the public eye. Their relationship became the talk of the town in 2023 while he was on The Tour with his brothers Nick and Kevin Jonas.
Turner was present at opening night at Yankee Stadium, making the split even more groundbreaking. The two tied the knot in 2019 and welcomed two daughters together. During this difficult time, Jonas said he turned to music.
"I was going through a lot of life changes," said the "Cake by the Ocean" artist. "Finding out who I was as a person and father and friend, and living under the microscope of what the music industry can be. And I think, at such a crazy time in my life, I looked to music as an outlet."
Music for People Who Believe in Love is more than just an album – it's a tribute to Jonas's journey through personal growth and newfound happiness. It's all about celebrating the good things in life and the positive path he's on, rather than using music as a platform for drama.
Jonas decided to pursue a full-length album after he penned "Only Love" alongside his brothers. He explained to Billboard that the track deeply resonated with him and fueled him with additional inspiration to keep creating.
"I think that the song was going toward the direction of some personal stuff that I went through," he pointed out. "So I go to Kevin and Nick, 'Hey, can I use this as a catapult to go explore what this sound could be, and also what I'mn trying to figure out emotionally?' They were very supportive – Nick said, 'Well, damn, I really like that song. But I get what you need to do, so go for it.'"
Jonas stressed that songs on Music for People Who Believe in Love won't sonically be familiar to a Jonas Brothers anthem or have touches of DNCE's signature sound. In fact, he stepped outside of his comfort zone and played with his artistry. Many may hear a dash of rock, alt-pop, and even a bit of '90s country.
Not only does he hope that this project displays a new side of his craft, but make his fans feel less alone.
"At the core of it," he says. "If this body of work helps people through what they're going through, that's all I can really wish for," he added.
Fan Of View: Jonas Brothers fans believe Joe Jonas' upcoming album isn't directly targeting Sophie Turner, but they expect it to offer insight into his feelings about their public divorce. Given how shocking the split was, fans see this album as a healthy way for Joe to process his emotions. The couple appeared to have a strong and happy relationship, especially with two children together, so fans are eager to hear Joe's side of the story. Now, they're also curious about how Sophie feels about this deeply personal project.
