If you were at Shakira’s concert at MetLife Stadium last week (May 15), health officials say you may have been exposed to measles and fans are not happy about how it’s being handled.

Earlier this week (May 20) the New Jersey Department of Health confirmed that someone infectious with measles attended the sold-out show. The person, who isn’t a New Jersey resident, was contagious during the concert, potentially exposing tens of thousands of people to the highly contagious virus.

So far, no additional cases have been reported. But fans are frustrated that Shakira hasn’t acknowledged the situation at all. The department explained that symptoms could develop as late as June 6.

With Beyoncé set to perform at the same stadium tonight (May 22), many are wondering: Is MetLife taking any extra precautions? What should concertgoers know before they show up?

Measles spreads easily through the air — by coughing, sneezing, talking, or even singing, and the virus can linger in the air or on surfaces for up to two hours. The MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella) is your best protection, with two doses offering 97% effectiveness.

"The virus spreads easily through the air when someone coughs or sneezes and can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves the area," read the report. "People can also get sick when they come in contact with mucus or saliva from an infected person."

If you’re planning to attend an upcoming concert at MetLife and haven’t been vaccinated, health experts suggest checking your status and being extra cautious. If you start feeling sick, isolate and contact a healthcare provider before going in.

So far, neither MetLife Stadium nor Beyoncé’s team has made a public statement about any added safety measures — leaving fans to weigh the risk and make their own decisions.

There have already been several measles outbreaks in 2025, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting over 1,000 confirmed cases so far. The last major outbreak occurred in 2019, when 1,274 cases were recorded nationwide. At this rate, 2025 is on track to become the largest measles outbreak in the U.S. in 25 years.

We’ll keep you posted as this story develops.
