It's a bird! It's a pla — Wait, that isn't Superman!?
"Truth. Justice. Whatever" is the official tagline of Supergirl (2026) and that seems to be the perfect encapsulation of Milly Alcock's portrayal of the character.
We first met Kara Zor-El (Supergirl's real name) briefly during a drunken stupor in Superman (2025) and it was clear that she would be the antithesis to the always righteous Superman. This teaser trailer, gives us a few glimpses into her backstory.
One thing that stands out is her continued drinking. The trailer starts with her waking up, sunglasses still on, clearly hungover, and later shows her toasting to her 23rd birthday. In Superman her drunken state is presented as though she just likes to party, but now it seems that it is fueled by a great pain. Watching your home planet get destoyed could do that to a person, "super" or not.
"Krypton didn't die in a day. The gods are not that kind."
She didn't just survive this tragic event, she lived through it and it's clearly shaped her beliefs. This is echoed when Kara says, "He sees the good in everyone. I see the truth" about Superman. Her cousin when sent away, was afforded the luxury of being rasied by loving farmers in Kansas, whereas Kara may have had to fend for herself. Now her cynicism is starting to make sense. It's a very different dynamic that the two Kryptonians share and I hope its explored in this or future movies.
There is one exciting blink-and you'll-miss-it part of the trailer, and it's our first look at Jason Momoa as Lobo. The actor has been eyeing the role for awhile, and after seeing Lobo in the comics for roughly one second, you could understand why Momoa would be the perfect fit.
His movie design looks spot on, if you, like me had to pause the trailer to even get a good look. Momoa famously portrayed Aquaman in the previous DCEU, so it is interesting to see him join the DCU so early on, but then again this isn't anything new in superhero movies.
Overall, this movie looks like fun. Aside from an oft forgotten movie in 1984, this is the first time Supergirl is getting her own standalone movie, which is exciting in and of itself. Although the movie seems overall lighthearted, her tragic backstory still leaves a lot to unpack setting the stage for just enough drama.
Superheroes with their tragic backstories... There's also lot of potential to explore her and her cousin's differing philosophies which makes for a compelling dynamic. Plus we're getting a ton more Krypto screentime which, of course, is a huge bonus.
Supergirl lands in theaters June 26, 2026.
