Jon M. Chu teases a mystery actor voicing the Cowardly Lion in 'Wicked: For Good,' sparking wild fan theories ahead of the film’s November 21 release.
Jon M. Chu is keeping Wicked: For Good audiences on the edge of their seats and not just with the story.
In a recent interview with Deadline, the director revealed a juicy secret – he has recruited a mystery actor to voice the Cowardly Lion in the upcoming sequel.
“I was like, ‘It’s not a ton of lines, but maybe you have a little time. I know you’re busy. I’ll come to you,’” Chu said. “He was like, ‘Why the f--- not, let’s go!’ And then we went ahead and recorded the lines.”
Chu wasn’t spilling the name yet, but he hinted fans will be in for a major treat when the actor appears on the red carpet.
“Man, wait until the red carpet when the actor who gave us the Cowardly Lion’s voice steps foot on it. It’ll be wild,” he teased.
The Cowardly Lion is, of course, a beloved character from The Wizard of Oz, first immortalized by Bert Lahr in 1939. In Wicked, which reimagines the world of Oz, the character’s cameo has fans speculating nonstop about who could be behind the voice. Social media is flooded with guesses ranging from actors known for their iconic voices – think James Corden or Billy Porter to unexpected pop stars, considering Chu’s history of blending music and film in fun and surprising ways.
“I’m literally losing it trying to guess who it is,” one fan wrote on social media. “It’s got to be someone huge. I can’t even imagine how insane the reveal will be!” Another added, “If it’s a pop star like Ariana Grande or someone else, I’m gonna scream. This is next-level hype."
Chu also discussed the return of other fan-favorite characters, including Dorothy, the Tin Man, and the Scarecrow. While he confirmed Dorothy has been cast, he remained tight-lipped about her screen time.
“How much of Dorothy do you see? I can’t confirm or deny,” Chu said. “But does The Wizard of Oz and our movie intersect in movie two more than ever? One hundred percent.”
Alongside Cynthia Erivo and Grande, stars like Michelle Yeoh, Marissa Bode, Bowen Yang, Ethan Slater, Jonathan Bailey, and Jeff Goldblum are reprising their roles, making Wicked: For Good a star-studded affair. The film hits theaters November 21, and with the Cowardly Lion mystery added to the mix, fans are more excited than ever.
