Selena Gomez opened up on the Therapuss podcast about how her iconic friendship with Taylor Swift began during their teenage relationships with the Jonas Brothers.
Not the Jonas Brothers being footnotes in the friendship of the decade! Selena Gomez just reminded us that the real love story wasn’t between her and Nick Jonas — it was the iconic, unbreakable sisterhood between her and Taylor Swift.
On the latest episode of the Therapuss podcast with Jake Shane (aired August 6), Gomez got all nostalgic.
“Taylor and I dated the Jonas Brothers,” she said with a smirk. “I dated Nick, and she dated Joe… and we like to say the best thing we got out of those relationships was each other.”
Back in 2008, a 15-year-old Gomez was fresh off her Disney Channel breakthrough, while 18-year-old Swift was just gearing up to release her sophomore album Fearless. The two connected during their whirlwind teenage romances with Nick and Joe Jonas, respectively.
“We were young. We didn’t know what we were doing,” Selena admitted. But what they did do was forge a friendship that’s lasted 16 years and outlived more celebrity marriages than we can count.
During this time, Gomez also got to hear "Love Story" before the rest of us. In a hotel room, no less.
“I believe 'Love Story' was the first song she had ever played me and it wasn’t released yet,” she revealed. “I remember it vividly… it was one of those songs I instantly heard and thought, 'This is one of the most beautiful songs ever.'"
Fast-forward to now, and these two are still serving friendship goals. Whether it's Swift baking Gomez sourdough bread for her birthday (complete with a tag that read, “It’s a loaf story”) or Gomez gassing up Swift's re-recorded albums, they’ve shown up for each other through every era. Literally and figuratively.
“She’s a chameleon. She’s incredible,” Gomez gushed.
Let’s talk trauma bonding. It’s real — and it might just be the unspoken glue that first brought Taylena together. Heartbreak by Jonas? Shared. Media scrutiny? Shared. Growing up under the blinding spotlight? Shared. The depth of their friendship isn’t just rooted in girlhood fun — it’s built on survival in an industry that often chews women up and spits them out.
Fans were in shambles over the story, of course. X (formerly Twitter) went full nostalgia mode:
“Knowing Selena heard ‘Love Story’ before the world did makes the song even more iconic,” one fan wrote. “This is the kind of story that makes pop history.”
Fans say it only strengthens the song’s legacy — not just as a chart-topping single, but as the beginning of a sisterhood that continues to inspire millions.
