Fans of 'The Office' are excited and a little nervous to see Oscar Nuñez reprise Oscar Martinez in Peacock’s new spinoff 'The Paper,' wondering how he’ll navigate this fresh, hilarious world.
Fans of The Office are both thrilled and apprehensive as Oscar Nuñez reprises his role as Oscar Martinez in Peacock's upcoming spinoff, The Paper, premiering September 4.
Set in the same universe as the beloved sitcom, the new series shifts the documentary crew's focus to a struggling newspaper in Toledo, Ohio.
Oscar, now the head accountant at The Truth Teller, finds himself in a new environment with a fresh set of quirky colleagues. Nuñez expressed his excitement about returning to the character, calling it "a dream come true" and a "wonderful" experience.
Creator Greg Daniels approached Nuñez about the role, and the actor was eager to continue Oscar's journey.
"Greg Daniels asked me about it, and I said, 'Yeah, of course, if you have an idea for this, I you know we're in good hands," the actor previously told E! News. "Let's go for it."
Daniels and co-creator Michael Koman intentionally chose to bring back only Oscar, aligning with the original series' conclusion, where Oscar's storyline remained open-ended. This decision allows The Paper to stand on its own while maintaining a connection to The Office universe. They attempted to surprise fans and keep his appearance hush-hush.
"It was supposed to be under wraps," he said about his character. "We kept it a secret as much as we could."
However, not all fans share the same enthusiasm. While some are excited to see a familiar face, others worry that the new series might tarnish the original's legacy. Nuñez, however, cautioned fans that the new storyline takes a different direction, so they shouldn't expect the classic "what she said" jokes or the playful antics that defined Dunder Mifflin.
"The character is in a new city," he shared. "So, for him, it's all different people. For me, it is too, because I'm not going to be the same person looking around saying, 'Where's Kate [Flannery], where's Creed [Bratton]?' It's a whole other thing."
Co-star Alex Edelman jumped in, building on Nuñez’s statement, "Obviously everybody's gonna ask about it because we're in the same universe, but we have very different problems on the show. We have very different creative challenges, the set is different, the characters are different, with one exception. But even the way Oscar fits into this cast, it's so different than how he fits into The Office. Oscar's like a mentor figure in this show. He's sort of the dad."
As the premiere date approaches, fans remain divided. Some are eager to revisit the world of The Office, while others hope the new series captures the original's magic without overstepping its bounds. Only time will tell if The Paper can live up to the legacy of its predecessor.
