Game of Thrones revolutionized television, but could it make the same impact in theaters?
There's a possibility we might be headed to Westeros yet again, this time on the big screen. It's been reported by Page Six Hollywod that “House of Cards” showrunner and “Andor” writer Beau Willimon has submitted a script to Warner Bros. to adapt the fantasy franshise into a full-length movie. While no official plot details have been provided, it's been speculated that the movie will be set a few centuries before the award-winning HBO series following Aegon I, the founder of the Targaryen dynasty, and his conquest of Westeros.
Although Game of Thrones has had two successful and critically received spinoff series, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, fans are still upset about the ending of the original.

On Variety's post announcing the potential new movie one of the most liked comments reads "Are we redoing S8? Then I am in." Another comment on a post from The Hollywood Reporter reads, "Stop with the spinoffs, just give us a decent ending."
As many know, Game of Thrones is based on George R.R. Martin's series of novels titled "A Song of Fire and Ice." The HBO series remained true to the novels for most of its run, until writers hit a road bump around season 6: the novels weren't complete. Referring to Martin's outlines for the final books and developing their own ideas, the writers brought the series across the finish line but at the cost of fan sentiment. According to Rotten Tomatoes, Season 8 only had a 55% approval rating amongst fans and even lower for critics at 30%. Compare this to seasons 1-7 that all received ratings around 90% and higher.
One aspect of this new movie that has fans holding on for hope is the inclusion of “Andor” writer Beau Willimon. "From Andor’s writer?! YESSS," reads the top liked comment on Variety's post.
"Andor," a Star Wars spinoff series on Disney+, is well revered for its mature approach to the franchise, leaning into more of a political thriller angle than the typical action-packed Star Wars stories we're used to. If Willimon can help deliver a great Star Wars series, then surely he could do the same for Game of Thrones seems to be consensus amongst fans. When you think about it, Game of Thrones and Star Wars are on similar trajectories: Both are beloved franchises that lost fan sentiment after unfavorable storylines, now holding onto relevancy with television and movie spinoffs.
Unfortunately for the upset fans, the Season 8 ending is what we are left with. There is no "Snyder Cut" in the cards for Game of Thrones. Fortunately for fans though, the Game of Thrones universe is vast and there are plenty more stories to tell outside of the Starks and Lannisters. The spinoff direction seems to be working for Game of Thrones and hopefully if all goes well, this movie will follow suit.
