Get an up-close look at the craft that is going into the upcoming series, 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.'
Ahead of the new Harry Potter series premiering this Christmas, HBO will be sharing a behind-the-scenes special called Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic which chronicles the development of Season 1 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the U.K.
If you're eager to return to Hogwarts, you're in luck because it's already premiering this weekend.
The behind-the-scenes trailer features quick interview clips from veteran actors John Lithgow (Professor Dumbledore) and Janet Mcteer (Professor McGonagall) as well as various members of the production crew praising the series' worldbuilding and scale, since these are two aspects that will set this series apart from the eight Harry Potter movies already released.
"We're adding a level of worldbuilding beyond what the audience is familiar with," said a member of the production crew. "To reimagine the Harry Potter canon, to let it breath, we get to enact all of the things that you know are going on in the wings but you don't see them," says Lithgow in the trailer.
Lithgow continued, "You wait forever to do something that means that much to people."
From controversy around J.K. Rowling, to an already exisiting Harry Potter interpretation, this is a series that needed to be sold to audiences from the get-go. Getting nitty gritty with the books was the only route they could've gone for something new, and they're really hammering this point home.
There is still a lot of excitement and optimism for this series though. Fans have praised the abundance of animatronics and physical set designs seen in the behind-the-scenes teaser, which is always a promising sign in a world of CGI and now AI.
This indicates a certain level of dedication being put into the production which makes the source material feel cared for. Others felt that this teaser looked better than the series trailer earlier this week. There were many comments about how washed out and desaturated the colors were but this BTS footage shows how lively and colorful the sets are. Some have demanded that the series be color graded again to better show its whimsical nature.
Why release BTS footage before the series even airs? other fans have asked.
They do have a point, but this special obviously won't be giving away major story details. This is all done to build anticipation and show the craft and care being put into this new series. A few even compared it to the Stranger Things documentary which premiered after the last season. One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5 caused some controversy by showing a writer's computer that had ChatGPT opened as well as insights into the finale's writing which many felt was lackluster.
Harry Potter fans seem happy this will come beforehand as it can only build excitement. We're calmly waiting to see how it looks.
Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic will debut Sunday, April 5 on HBO Max.
