We had the incredible opportunity to preview Universal’s Epic Universe in Orlando, and it’s safe to say this is a theme park game-changer. From the moment you enter, you’re immersed in a beautifully crafted world filled with groundbreaking rides, immersive storytelling, and unmatched theming. Epic Universe is divided into five fully themed “universes,” each centered around iconic franchises. Universal has gone beyond just building rides — they’ve built fully realized worlds that fans can live inside. Here’s a deep dive into each land, including the major attractions that you cannot miss.

1. Dark Universe (Universal Monsters)

Dark Universe is a gothic fever dream — creepy, immersive, and surprisingly emotional. Set in the cursed village of Darkmoor, the land seamlessly blends Eastern European folklore with Universal’s iconic monster lore. Thick fog rolls through twisted cobblestone streets. Crumbling castles and flickering lanterns surround you, while eerie howls echo from the woods. The narrative here centers around Dr. Frankenstein’s failed experiments and the monstrous aftermath they’ve unleashed. It’s not just a haunted house-style area — it’s a fully alive world with roaming monsters, atmospheric effects, and dark secrets lurking in every shadow.

The highlight here is Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, a trackless dark ride that takes you deep into Frankenstein’s lab. You witness a failed attempt to tame the monsters, which leads to total chaos. It’s intense, full of practical effects, massive animatronics, and moments that’ll make your jaw drop. Think of it as a spiritual successor to Haunted Mansion and Rise of the Resistance, with a horror edge.

Must-See Attractions in Dark Universe:

Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment – A dark ride masterpiece with shocking set pieces and rich storytelling.

Darkmoor Village – Explore monster-infested alleys, eerie shops, and interact with characters like The Invisible Man or the Hunchback.

2. The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic

Rather than re-creating familiar locations like Hogwarts or Diagon Alley, this new land explores uncharted magical territory. The Ministry of Magic combines the art-deco architecture of the British wizarding world with the Parisian flair from the Fantastic Beasts films. Unlike anything else in the franchise, the result is a sophisticated and mysterious setting. Spell effects are hidden in plain sight. The storytelling is more nuanced, tapping into government secrets, magical politics, and hidden histories.

The standout here is the queue itself for the land’s main attraction, which wasn't yet open to us at previews — an immersive journey through the Ministry’s twisting corridors, shifting offices (even Umbridge's iconic cat-filled sanctuary), and enchanted artifacts. However, it's not just a lead-in to the ride; it’s an attraction in its own right. Screens disguised as enchanted portraits, newspapers with animated headlines, and interactive magic effects make you feel like you’re a Ministry employee about to uncover something big.

Must-See Attractions in Ministry of Magic:

Battle of the Ministry – A dark ride using new ride tech where you join a magical conflict inside the Ministry.

The Ministry Queue Experience – Includes spell-casting, moving magical architecture, and incredibly detailed sets.

Place Cachée (Wizarding Paris) – Beautiful alleyways and shops inspired by the magical quarter of Paris in Fantastic Beasts, with hidden wand experiences and themed food such as Butterbeer and even Butterbeer crepes! Yum.

3. Super Nintendo World

This land is pure joy. Super Nintendo World is a technicolor explosion of nostalgia and interactive fun. The theming is flawless — every warp pipe, coin block, and sound effect is pulled straight from the games. What really sets it apart is the interactivity. With Power-Up Bands, you can collect digital coins, complete mini-games, and even battle bosses in hidden zones throughout the land.

At the heart of the experience is Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, a unique augmented reality dark ride that blends physical sets with AR visors. It’s more of a game than a ride — each race is different, and you earn points based on your steering and target accuracy. There’s also Yoshi’s Adventure, which is slower-paced but offers great views of the land and tons of character moments.

Must-See Attractions in Super Nintendo World:

Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge – A high-tech AR ride that simulates racing inside the Mushroom Kingdom.

Yoshi’s Adventure – A charming, family-friendly ride with tons of colorful views and hidden easter eggs.

Toadstool Café – Eat meals that look like they came straight out of a power-up box, all while Chef Toad entertains on screens.

Power-Up Band Challenges – Complete activities around the land to unlock the ultimate showdown with Bowser Jr.

4. How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk

Isle of Berk is a warm, windswept land inspired by the beloved How to Train Your Dragon films. You can hear the waves crashing, see dragons swooping overhead, and smell the wood-burning ovens from Viking feasts. It’s an incredibly detailed area with emotional beats, playful energy, and massive scale. The land blends family-friendly fun with just enough thrill to engage all ages.

The star here is Hiccup’s Wing Gliders, a soaring family coaster that simulates flying alongside Toothless. It has gentle launches, sweeping turns, and panoramic views of the land and surrounding park. The land also includes a training arena, interactive water play zones, and meet-and-greets with lifelike dragon animatronics that feel straight out of the films.

Must-See Attractions in the Isle of Berk:

Hiccup’s Wing Gliders – A flying coaster that balances thrill with wonder, letting you “train” and ride dragons.

Dragon Training Camp – An interactive zone for kids to test their Viking skills and meet dragon hatchlings.

The Great Hall Feast – A grand dining hall with roaring fires, wooden beams, and animatronic dragons overhead.

Toothless Encounter – A meet-and-greet featuring an incredibly expressive Toothless animatronic that reacts to guests.

5. Celestial Park (Epic Universe’s Central Hub)

Celestial Park is more than just the center of Epic Universe — it’s a major highlight, especially for rollercoaster enthusiasts everywhere. A whimsical, dreamlike land built around themes of stargazing, wonder, and cosmic energy, this area connects all the other lands while offering its own set of attractions. Lush gardens, gravity-defying fountains, and celestial music make it the perfect place to explore during the day or relax under dazzling lights at night.

The crown jewel is Stardust Racers, a dual-track racing coaster that twists and soars above the park’s skyline. It’s not just about speed—the coaster features synchronized launches, near-miss elements, and a stunning LED lighting package that turns the ride into a glowing spectacle once the sun goes down.

Must-See Attractions in Celestial Park:

Stardust Racers – A dueling coaster that delivers both speed and spectacle. A top-tier thrill ride for coaster fans.

Astronomica Fountain Show – A beautifully choreographed water and light show that adds heart and soul to the park.

Celestial Carousel – A dreamlike carousel featuring celestial creatures like space whales, constellation lions, and glowing orbs.

Epic Universe is a storytelling powerhouse. Each of its five lands feels like its own fully fleshed-out world, with emotional depth, immersive design, and rides that push the boundaries of what theme parks can do. Whether you’re there for the scares of Dark Universe, the wonder of Berk, the kinetic chaos of Nintendo, the elegance of the Ministry, or the cosmic beauty of Celestial Park — there is something unforgettable waiting around every corner.
