There's more 'Stranger Things' going on, Nicolas Cage as Spider-Man, a resurrected 'Star Wars' villain and more!
In the vast world of streaming, it's hard to land on your next binge sometimes. If comic-con is more your speed, then we have a few suggestions for your watchlist. From Star Wars, to superheroes, to Stranger Things: Here are our top five nerdy shows you should be watching right now.
The Boys Season 5
The Boys, the raunchy dark comedy that satirizes both superhero media and the modern world, is the midst of its fifth and final season. The series follows a group of superheroes called "The Seven" lead by Homelander. Think of a cross between Superman and Captain America. While these heroes are "marketed" as all-american and good natured, they were secretly created by a company called Vought-American, and their leader has ulterior motives.
The Boys, a ragtag group of individuals who have suffered losses at the hands of these heroes, try everything they can to expose Vought and put a stop to Homelander. Debuting right after the release of Avengers: Endgame, the series has redefined the superhero genre for the 2020's incorporating way more violence, shocking imagery, and language than ever seen before in a show of this nature. If you're tuning in for the first time, be warned, the series is not for the faint of heart, but it is a wild ride. The Boys Season 5 is streaming now on Amazon Prime.
Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord
If you're a fan of Star Wars' animated series like Clone Wars or Rebels, then Maul – Shadow Lord will surely scratch that itch. Taking place shortly after the events of the Clone Wars, Darth Maul attempts to rebuild his criminal syndicate and seeks a new apprentice. Darth Maul has been a fan-favorite since he was first introduced in 1999 in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, but his popularity has only grown since he's been resurrected by Star War's animated catalog.
This series also marks the first time a Star Wars story had a villain as the protagonist (The Book of Boba Fett doesn't quite fit the mold), so it'll be something fresh for the franchise to explore. Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is streaming now on Disney+.
Spider-Noir
So we cheated a little here since Spider-Noir hasn't debuted yet, but best believe we will be locked in when it comes out later in May. Starring the iconic Nicolas Cage, who also voiced the character in the animated Into the Spider-Verse movie, Spider-Noir follows an alternate version of Spider-Man set in the 1920's who doubles as a private detective. The concept alone is enough to create excitement, but based on the trailers, the series looks like a visual treat. Relying heavily on high contrast noir visuals, the series nails the look of the pulpy noir genre from that era. What's even more exciting is the series will be available in a stylized color format as well because we love options. Spider-Noir comes to Prime Video on May 27th.
Daredevil: Born Again Season 2
The second season of Daredevil: Born Again seems to have found its stride. While Season 1 was plagued with rewrites and storylines taped together, Season 2 feels much more cohesive with a unified vision. Matt Murdock is still trying to take down the Kingpin, Wilson Fisk, with both his fists and the law, but the stakes are much higher this time after the events of Season 1 are still felt. This season also has given more screentime to Benjamin Poindexter aka "Bullseye" who has probably the most memorable fight sequences of the season. While the cast of characters is mostly new for the Disney+ Daredevil continuation, you'll still need a lot of backstory from the Netflix seasons before you dive in. Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is streaming now on Disney+.
Stranger Things: Tales from '85
Unfortunately the rumored secret episode of Stranger Things never existed, but that doesn't mean the story has to stop there. Stranger Things: Tales from '85 is an animated spinoff of the beloved sci-fi series that attempts to blend the tone of the original series with "Saturday morning cartoons" according to the Duffer Brothers.
Tales from '85 is set between seasons two and three of Stranger Things, when the series was at peak 80's nostalgia, and follows the gnag as they try to solve more supernatural phenomena happening in Hawkins during the winter of 1985. It's fun 80's horror sci-fi wrapped in a more family-friendly package. It's a great watch for fans while we wait for the live recording of The First Shadow. Stranger Things: Tales from '85 is streaming now on Netflix.
